  • ConAgra adds former Ford Motor Co. exec to board

    ConAgra has appointed Thomas “Tony” K. Brown to its board of directors, effective Oct. 15. With the addition of Brown, ConAgra’s board has increased to 12. 

  • JC’s 5 Star Outlet going out of business

    Columbus, Ohio -- JC's 5 Star Outlet, formerly the outlet store division of J.C. Penney, is winding down operations and closing its 15 stores. "Going out of business" sales will start Wednesday, offering shoppers deeper discounts than the usual outlet prices of 25% to 75% off retail.

    The 5 Star Outlet stores, which had been designated for closure by J.C. Penney, were acquired by SB Acquisitions in October 2011, and rebranded JC's 5 Star Outlet.
       

  • Record number of filled prescriptions drive Walgreens’ quarterly results

    Walgreens filled a record 821 million prescriptions which helped boost the company’s retail pharmacy market share for the fiscal year to 19.1%. 

    Walgreens posted a sales gain of 0.8% for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, reaching a record $72.2 billion. Early morning trading boosted Walgreens' share price from a close of $53.80 on Monday to $56.06, an increase of 4.2%.

    New York – 99dresses is introducing a mobile iOS app. 99dresses offers a virtual “clothes swap party” where women list unwanted fashion items and receive virtual “buttons” they can use to claim apparel items listed by other customers. The item listed is then emailed a prepaid USPS shipping label.

    Grapevine, Texas – GameStop plans to hire approximately 17,000 employees nationwide as the company prepares for the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One console launches, as well as the holiday shopping season.

  • ICSC: Holiday sales to rise 3.4%

    New York -- Holiday sales will rise 3.4% sales increase, slightly stronger than last year, for the traditional November-December holiday period, even though retailers are expecting a more modest spending season, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers.

    Additionally, ICSC anticipates that the other two measures of U.S. industry holiday sales will both increase over last year.
