  • Online menswear retailer expands offline

    An online retailer specializing in men’s custom-tailored suits and menswear, is set to open its third physical location.   Black Label will open a store on July 11 in downtown Chicago this summer, the Chicago Tribune reported. In addition to suits, the store will also shirts, suits, denim, chinos and outerwear.   To date, the retailer has opened a store in Boston, and one in Washington, D.C. It hopes to double its store count next year, the report said.   
  • Tech Bytes: Amazon Prime Day: What Can Retailers Learn?

    Another July, another Amazon Prime Day. With the e-tail leader already confirming this retail “holiday” will be back for a third time next July, let’s take a look back at the 2016 edition.   While a lot went well for Amazon during Prime Day this year, we may as well start with the biggest blunder. Namely, the widespread checkout issues that occurred during the morning hours. A glitch caused some U.S. and U.K. shoppers to have difficulties loading items into their shopping carts and/or making purchases.  
  • Supervalu’s Van Buskirk to depart

    A Supervalu executive will be departing the company, according to a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The company’s executive VP merchandising, marketing, retail and pharmacy Mark Van Buskirk’s employment will end effective July 16, the filing says.    In the interim, the company is evaluating a succession plan and Van Buskirk’s functional areas will report to Supervalu executive VP, COO and CFO Bruce Besanko.  
  • Cabela’s continues to expand

    Cabela’s Inc. announced plans to expand to open two new stores, including its first-ever location in New Mexico.   The hunting and fishing retailer will open a 70,000-sq.-ft. store at Legacy at Journal Center, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2017.   The store will offer customers an immersive outdoor experience with a 360-degree mountain and wildlife-display feature, dozens of taxidermy mounts, vintage outdoor photos and memorabilia, and a regionally specific theme.  
  • New Sam’s Club store provides seamless shopping

    A Sam’s Club location opening in Columbia, South Carolina, will be among the first to offer a new mobile payment option.  
  • Home furnishings giant plugging in more fuel cells

    Ikea is expanding its renewable energy portfolio with state-of-the-art fuel cell technology.   Based on the success of its pilot installation, Ikea said it plans to install biogas-powered fuel cell systems at four more stores in California.  
  • Familiar name returns as CEO of Canadian Tire

    Toronto-based general merchandise retailer Canadian Tire Corp. has made a sudden shift at the top of the company’s executive structure.   Stephen Wetmore, who previously served as CEO of Canadian Tire from 2009-2014, has been named president and CEO of the company, effective immediately. Wetmore, who has remained on the board of directors after leaving the CEO post, will remain a director of the company but step down as deputy chairman of the board.  
  • Major convenience store/gas station buyer emerges

    Durham, North Carolina-based conglomerate The Guess Corp. is seeking to acquire at least 1,000 U.S. convenience store/ gas station units in the next 12 months.   Working through a subsidiary, the company is looking to acquire an average of 100 branded and unbranded units per month. Upon completion of the purchases, Guess Corp. intends to re-brand and renovate the properties with innovative and sleek designs and provide enhanced CRM technology. The company has invited brokers to provide buyer representation with higher commissions.
