  • Sam's Club hosts free diabetes health screenings

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club is offering free diabetes health screenings for both adults and children on Sept. 10, the retailer announced.

    The free screenings will be held in Sam's Club pharmacies nationwide from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include glucose, A1C, blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) tests. Glucose tests are not available, however, in Tennessee, Maryland and Hawaii, Sam's Club noted.

  • Whole Foods testing Wellness Club concept

    New York City -- Whole Foods Market is testing membership-only Wellness Clubs in select locations, with the initial site in the chain’s store in Dedham, Mass., USA Today reported. Four additional sites are expected to open this fall.

    The company is charging a one-time fee of $199, with monthly membership dues of $45, according to the report, for which members will receive lifestyle evaluations, classes in nutrition, cooking and health and 10% off on 1,000 “better-for-you” foods sold in Whole Foods.

  • Zale and Jessica Simpson team up for jewelry line

    Dallas -- Zale Corp. is teaming up with celebrity Jessica Simpson on an exclusive collection of diamond fashion jewelry. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

    Jessica Simpson, known as a pop music artist, actress and reality TV personality, has become quite successful in the fashion world. Her Jessica Simpson Collection, which sells shoes, clothing, fragrances and other goods, is said to be worth about $1 billion.

  • Inflation feeds Winn-Dixie ident-store growth

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Inflationary increases, sales growth at remodeled stores and a boost from fuelperks! helped drive up Winn-Dixie's second quarter identical-store sales, while net sales dipped.

    According to Winn-Dixie's chief Peter Lynch, Winn-Dixie is riding a strong headwind into fiscal 2012 powered by a number of influencers — a marketing program that better sustains margins, its loyalty program Fuelperks!, an improved stocking system and a significant focus on improving the customer experience.

  • Uniqlo opening two global flagships in Big Apple in October

    New York City -- Japanese fast-fashion giant Uniqlo is set to open its largest global flagship to date, an 89,000-sq.-ft. store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The store, which will also be the larger single retailer on Fifth Avenue, will open on Oct. 14.

    One week later, Uniqlo will debut a second flagship in Manhattan, a 64,000-sq.-ft. store 34th St. It will be the chain’s second largest global flagship

  • Cypress Retail to lease four Safeway-owned centers in Los Angeles

    Los Angeles -- X Team International announced that Los Angeles-based partner Cypress Retail Group has been retained by Property Development Centers, a wholly owned subsidiary of Safeway Inc., to serve as the leasing agent for four shopping centers under development and redevelopment in the Los Angeles area.

    The four shopping centers, located in La Canada, La Crescenta, Eagle Rock and Pasadena, are all being redeveloped, renovated or expanded, and are anchored by Vons, a Los Angeles-based, Safeway-owned grocery store.
     

  • Kroger stores to observe moment of silence on 9/11

    Cincinnati -- Kroger Co. will hold a moment of silence of September 11, 2011, in its 2,449 stores nationwide. Stores located in the Eastern Time zone will pause for a moment of silence to remember the victims and honor the heroes of the 9/11 tragedy at 8:46 a.m., the time when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center's north tower ten years ago.

    Because of the time difference, Kroger's stores in Central, Mountain and Western Time zones will pause for a moment at a locally-designated time on Sunday morning.
