  • Kohl's gets piece of American Idol action

    MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — Kohl’s Department Stores is looking to cash in on the popularity of the music competition show, "American Idol," by launching an exclusive American Idol apparel collection. The line will be called Authentic Icon and will be available exclusively at Kohl’s and Kohls.com beginning in April.

  • Fred’s Q4 profit rises 14%

    Memphis, Tenn. -- Fred’s reported Wednesday that net income for the fourth quarter jumped 14%, boosted by more robust sales and a favorable tax adjustment.

    Profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose to $9.8 million, from $8.6 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue rose 2.5% to $497.6 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $498.4 million in sales.

    Same-store sales were flat.

  • Restaurant sales rose 3.4% in 2011

    Chicago -- A report released Tuesday by research firm Technomic found that sales among the 500 largest U.S. restaurant chains increased 3.4% to $242 billion in 2011.

    That compares to just a 1.8% increase in 2010.

    Of the 500 restaurants analyzed by Technomic, more than 60% posted at least nominal sales increases; just 193 saw sales declines in 2011, compared with 231 in 2010.

  • Retail Roadshow in Dallas on Thursday; register now

    New York -- Retail executives are invited to attend the Microsoft Retail Roadshow, which will be held in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas, on Thursday, March 22. The half-day event will explore ways that retailers can increase operational efficiency, lower costs and innovate to drive customer engagement.

    The event, which will include continental breakfast, lunch, demos and a partner showcase, will be held at Microsoft, 7000 State Highway 161 (George Bush Turnpike), Building LC1, Irving, Texas, 75039.

  • CSA columnist analyzes Kohl’s smaller-format store plans

    New York -- Columnist Jeff Green isn’t really surprised that another retailer has joined the ranks of those chains that are downsizing or rolling out smaller format. But he finds the fact that Kohl’s has joined the crowd a little bit different and more interesting.

  • Gordmans profit rises 21% in Q4

    Omaha, Neb. -- Apparel and home décor retailer Gordman Stores reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose 21.2% to $10.2 million, from $8.4 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales increased 10% to $185.1 million. Same-store sales rose 2.1%.

  • DSW Q4 profit beats Street, on track to open up to 40 stores this year

    Columbus, Ohio -- DSW Inc. reported Tuesday that profit for the fourth quarter rose to $19.4 million from $200,000 a year earlier, beating analysts’ estimates for the quarter.

    Fourth-quarter revenue rose 10% to $513.7 million, surpassing Wall Street’s estimated $511.2 million in revenue. Same-store sales increased 5.6%.
