    Over the last decade, America’s Atlantic shores have faced the wrath of more than a dozen hurricanes, causing damage worth several billion dollars. Year after year, retailers have been learning and fine-tuning their strategies to respond to the critical needs of consumers in the impacted areas, both in preparing for a disaster and immediately after.

  • IBM: Cyber Monday numbers reach all-time high

    Armonk, N.Y. -- IBM reported Tuesday that online spending surged 30.3% year-over-year on Cyber Monday, an all-time high.

    Mobile shopping rose 70% over the prior year.

    As part of IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative, the IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark revealed the following additional Cyber Monday key findings:

  • Nor’easterly Surge

    Not even a hurricane named Sandy could erode the economic upsurge experienced by the northeastern United States over the last year. What this region rebuilt after the Great Recession has managed to stay strong even in the face of Sandy’s 80-mph winds, record flooding and the damage inflicted by its nor’easter sister that arrived just days after the fall 2012 hurricane.

  • Wal-Mart fires supplier that used Bangladesh factory

    New York -- According to a Tuesday report by Bloomberg, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has terminated a supplier that made apparel at the Bangladesh factory where an estimated 124 people died in a fire on Nov. 24.

    The Tazreen Fashion-owned factory will no longer produce merchandise for Walmart, according to the report, which also stated that Tazreen subcontracted work without Wal-Mart Stores’ authorization. The supplier has not been named.

     

  • Sheetz wellness center to be first-in-county LEED certified

    Claysburg, Pa. -- C-store chain Sheetz said Tuesday that it will open its new employee health-and-wellness center on Wednesday, marking the first LEED-certified building in Blair County.

    The 11,000-sq.-ft. Sheetz Center for Shwellness is located beside the Sheetz Distribution Center in Claysburg, Pa. In partnership with Marathon-Health, the company will use medical staff to provide individual health and wellness coaching to employees and their eligible dependents.

  • Children's Place CFO resigns, replaced by former Talbots COO

    Secaucus, N.J. -- The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc. reported Monday that its CFO Steven Baginski has resigned the company, effective immediately.

    According to the retailer, Baginski is leaving to pursue other interests.

    Former COO and CFO of The Talbots Inc., Michael Scarpa, has been named Baginski’s successor, effective Dec. 3.  

    Scarpa also worked at Liz Claiborne Inc. for 25 years.
     

  • Neiman Marcus Q1 sales, profit rise

    Dallas -- Neiman Marcus Group reported Tuesday that earnings for the first quarter rose to $127.8 million, compared with $122.8 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales rose to $1.07 billion for the quarter, from $1.00 billion last year. Same-store sales climbed 5.4%.
