  • The Bon-Ton Stores to close Michigan furniture gallery

    York, Pa. -- The Bon-Ton Stores will close its Younkers Furniture Gallery in the Lakeshore Marketplace in Muskegon, Mich., in June. The closing will affect approximately 20 associates at the location.

    The Bon-Ton acquired the leasehold interests in the Muskegon Furniture Gallery store when it acquired Elder-Beerman in 2003. Bon-Ton does not expect the furniture gallery’s close to affect operations at the Younkers department store located in The Lakes Mall.

  • Retail sales fall 0.4% in March

    New York - U.S. retail sales fell 0.4% in March, the biggest decrease in nine months, amid a slowdown in hiring and higher taxes. Excluding sales of autos, gas and building materials, core sales dropped 0.2% in March, following a 0.3% increase in January.

  • Report: Costco co-founder to earn entrepreneur award

    New York -- The University of Missouri-Kansas City will present Costco co-founder Jim Sinegal with its Entrepreneur of the Year award at a special ceremony this fall, according to published reports.

    The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday that Sinegal, who retired as the club retailer's CEO in January 2012, would be among the honorees of the university's 28th Annual Entrepreneur of the Year Awards celebration.

    Sinegal founded Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco together with Jeff Brotman in 1983.
     

  • Cold weather and early Easter hamper March sales

    New York -- L.Brands, parent of Victoria's Secret, reported better-than-expected 3% sales in same-store sales for March. Zumiez Inc. and Buckle Inc. also both reported better-than-expected numbers.

    But other retailers were hampered by a colder-than-normal March, which caused many shoppers to put off buying warmer-weather clothing, and an early Easter. At The TJX Companies, same-store sales fell 2% in March, a bigger drop than was expected.

  • Pier 1 Q4 profit down 46% without last year’s tax benefit

    Fort Worth, Texas -- Pier 1's fourth-quarter earnings fell 46% compared with last year, when the chain recorded a large, one-time tax benefit.

    The company earned $61.7 million in the three months that ended March 2, compared with $115.2 million in last year's quarter. Revenue rose 16% to $551.6 million. Same-store sales climbed 7.9%.

    For the full year, Pier 1 earned $129.4 million on $1.7 billion in revenue.

    For its current fiscal year, the chain expects to open 30 stores.

  • Costco March same-store sales up 4%, misses Street

    Issaquah, Wash. -- Costco Wholesale Corp reported a 4% rise in same-store sales, missing analysts' expectations for a 5.2% increase. The company said its results were negatively impacted by lower fuel prices and a strong dollar, which hurt the value of its sales overseas.

    Net sales at Costco rose 7%to $9.67 billion for the five-week period ended April 7.

     

  • Men who sawed arms in Home Depot in critical condition

    New York -- A man who deliberately cut his arms using saws in the aisles of a Home Depot store in suburban Los Angeles on Wednesday is in critical condition, according to media reports.

    The man, whose man has not been released, was in the store's tool section when he grabbed several handsaws and began cutting into his upper arms. Panicked customers called 911.

    The man was in surgery hours after the incident.

     

  • Destination Maternity Q2 sales fall 2.1%

    Philadelphia -- Destination Maternity its total sales for the second quarter fell 2.1% to $134.9 million from $137.8 million. The company attributed the drop to the closure of all of its remaining leased departments within Babies “R” Us stores in October, along with the closures of underperforming stores.

    Despite the sales drop, Destination Maternity said it now expects its second-quarter profit to fall in the top half of its previously projected range of 38 cents to 44 cents per share, crediting tight management of its expenses.
