  • Sam’s Club earns Q3 bragging rights

    Sam’s Club was Walmart’s best performing division during the third quarter and holiday plans outlined by president and CEO Rosalind Brewer suggest that could be the case in the fourth quarter as well.

    Same store sales at Sam’s increased 1.1% and total sales increased 2.1% to $12.4 billion a while with traffic was up among both business and individual members. Operating profit increased 9.2% to $474 million.

  • OfficeMax to open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night

    OfficeMax plans to open most of its stores at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night. Meanwhile, its e-commerce site will begin offering online Black Friday deals at 12:01 a.m. EST Thanksgiving morning.

    The OfficeMax Black Friday shopping event will take place for three days from Thursday, Nov. 28 through Saturday, Nov. 30 in stores and online. OfficeMax.com will also host a special online-only, pre-Black Friday sales event at 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, Nov. 27.

    XPO Logistics, a transportation logistics services provider in North America, has acquired Optima Service Solutions, a leading non-asset provider of last-mile logistics services for major retailers and manufacturers in the United States.

  • Neighborhood Market sees strongest growth to date

    Walmart opened 32 of its small format Neighborhood Market stores during the third quarter and is on track to end the year with nearly 400 units enroute to bigger things in 2014.

    Walmart’s small format stores generated third quarter same store sales of approximately 3.4%, according to the company, which rivals best-in-class supermarket competitors, namely Kroger.

  • Staples extends Black Friday sales

    In addition to opening stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Staples is extending Black Friday sales the entire week of Nov. 24 through Cyber Monday on Dec. 2.

    The retailer’s Black Friday promotions include online daily deals changed on a daily basis, trade-in/trade-up technology recycling programs that give holiday shoppers cash toward to the purchase of a new product, and free shipping for members of the Staples Rewards loyalty program and on all purchases of more than $45.

  • Dillard’s sees moderate net income, sales growth in Q3

    Dillard’s reported moderate growth in net income and sales during the third quarter of fiscal 2013. Compared to the same period a year earlier, net income increased 5% to $50.9 million from $48.5 million, while net sales climbed about 1% to $1.51 billion from $1.49 billion.

  • Changes for Dollar General’s board

    Dollar General has announced that Raj Agrawal and Adrian Jones have resigned their spots in the company’s board of directors, effective Dec. 5. Agrawal, a member of KKR & Co., and Jones, a managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Co., have served as directors of Dollar General since 2007.
