  • Rite Aid names Roundy’s exec as CFO

    Camp Hill, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corporation announced that Darren Karst is joining Rite Aid as executive VP and CFO, effective Aug. 20.

    Karst succeeds Frank Vitrano, who has announced he will retire in September, 2015. Until then, Vitrano retains the chief administrative officer responsibilities for the company’s information technology, real estate and indirect procurement functions. He will also serve as a key resource in the development and execution of new business and growth initiatives.

  • Unified Grocers taps new HR chief

    Unified Grocers has promoted Terry Bodwin to VP, chief human resources officer. She was previously VP, employee and labor relations.

    The appointment is part of a restructure designed to integrate and align all aspects of human resources company-wide. In her new role, Bodwin will report to Christine Neal, SVP, finance and treasurer.

  • Supervalu gets first of 18 Rainbow stores ready for business

    Supervalu has begun supplying the first of 18 Rainbow stores that are being acquired as part of the transactions that were announced May 7 between Roundy’s and a consortium of Supervalu and independent retailers.

    Following the store conversions, Supervalu will supply all 18 of the acquired stores out of its Hopkins, Minn., distribution center.
     

  • Report: Carrefour to shutter Indian stores

    Mumbai, India – In a move that may have implications for Wal-Mart, French retailer Carrefour S.A. will reportedly shutter its five Indian wholesale stores by the end of September 2014. According to Reuters, Carrefour is in advanced talks to sell its Indian assets to an unspecified buyer.

  • Roundy’s closes Minnesota DC, cuts 196 jobs

    Milwaukee – Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. is closing its distribution center in Stevens Point, Minnesota. The closure, expected to take place by Sept. 30, will eliminate 196 jobs.

  • Demoulas names co-CEOs

    Tewksbury, Mass. – Following the dismissal of former president and CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, the board of directors of Demoulas Super Markets Inc. has elected retail executives Felicia Thornton as COO and Jim Gooch as chief administrative officer, and the two will serve as co-CEOs. Both Thornton and Gooch had recently been serving as consultants to the company.

  • Supervalu to acquire Rainbow Stores in the Twin Cities

    Supervalu, the owner of Cub Foods, along with four Twin Cities-based independent grocery retailers, have each entered into definitive agreements to acquire select Rainbow Foods grocery stores. In total, they agreed to acquire 18 Rainbow grocery stores, including 13 Rainbow pharmacies and three Rainbow liquor stores in Minnesota.

  • Supervalu streamlines ops, names new presidents

    Supervalu reduced its organizational structure from three divisions to two and name Kevin Kemp president of the east region and Bill Chew president of the west region.

    The company did not indicate what roles Kemp and Chew played in the organization previously, but did note that the east region will be headquartered in Mechanicsville, VA and the west region will be based in Hopkins, MN near the company’s Eden Prairie headquarters.
