Gelson's Markets is joining Smart & Final on the acquisition of some Haggen properties in Southern California.

Gelson's, a regional supermarket chain operating in Southern California, announced it is bidding on eight Haggen locations across five counties: Los Angeles County (Santa Monica), Orange County (Laguna Beach, Ladera Ranch), Riverside County (Rancho Mirage), San Diego County (Carlsbad, Del Mar, Pacific Beach) and Ventura County (Thousand Oaks).

The bankrupt Haggen supermarket chain is following through on its promise to unload some of its California locations as the company looks to refocus its operations on 37 stores in the Pacific Northwest.

Haggen announced Monday that it has entered into an agreement with Smart & Final Stores Inc. for it to acquire 28 store leases and related assets from affiliates of Haggen Holdings for $56 million.

A week after suing Albertsons for $1 billion, west coast regional grocer Haggen has filed Chapter 11 and continues to cite Albertsons as the source of its difficulties.

Greensboro, N.C. -- The Fresh Market named a veteran food retailer who once led Food Lion as its new president and CEO. The hiring follows the abrupt termination of the chain's former CEO and comes as the once high-flying chain has seen its sales stagnate.

Greensboro, N.C. – The Fresh Market Inc. did not meet Wall Street expectations for profit or revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2015. The grocer reported net income of $17.47 million, up 53% from $11.39 million the prior period.

Higher gross margin and pretax income drove profit growth. Net sales increased 5% to $442.1 million from $422.23 million, and same-store sales decreased 1%. The Fresh Market plans to open 18 new stores and remodel or refresh nine to 10 stores during the full fiscal year.
