  • Kohl's Q3 profit flat, revenue rises

    Menomonee Falls, Wis. -- Kohl's Corp. reported late Wednesday it earned $194 million in the quarter ended Oct. 30, compared with nearly identical net income of $193 million in the year-ago period. The retailer cited rising costs for the flat profit performance.

    Revenue rose 4.2% to $4.22 billion, just missing Wall Street expectations of $4.3 billion.

  • SpendingPulse report: U.S. retail spending gains momentum in October

    Purchase, N.Y. -- A report release Thursday by MasterCard Advisors said that in October total retail sales, ex-auto, grew by 3.3% year-over-year, the strongest year-to-year pace since April.

    Similarly, according to MasterCard Advisors’ SpendingPulse, a macro-economic report tracking national retail and service sales, seasonally adjusted month-to-month sales were up by 3.1%. Excluding both auto and gasoline, on a seasonally unadjusted basis, year-over-year sales in October grew by 2.7%, slightly more than double September’s 1.3% increase.

  • Gap’s China stores debut along with an online retail store

    Shanghai, China -- Gap announced late Wednesday that its first four wholly owned Gap stores have debuted in China, along with the launch of its online retailer store gap.cn.

    Each store will house all Gap collections: Gap, GapKids, Baby Gap and Gap Body.

  • Kmart offers in-store pickup for online purchases

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears Holdings Corp. said Thursday that its Kmart division has launched an in-store pickup program for online purchases this holiday season.

    Kmart customers who buy items online can pick up their purchases on the same day at more than 600 locations. Customers can now buy items through the Kmart2go mobile website or smartphone applications and select in-store pickup. The apps also can be used in-store for product information.

  • Wal-Mart to offer free shipping for online buys

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Heating up the holiday retailing war, Wal-Mart Stores announced Thursday that it will offer free shipping on nearly 60,000 online items -- with no minimum purchase requirement.

    Wal-Mart's free shipping offer, which includes most electronics, jewelry and toys, will run through Dec. 20.

    According to Steve Nave, senior VP and general manager of Walmart.com, Walmart is trying to help its cost-conscious shoppers "save money so they can bring home more for less this holiday season."
