  • Fuel cell provider touts Walmart deal

    Walmart’s sustainability efforts are benefitting fuel cell provider Plug Power Inc., which said a contract it secured with the retailer earlier this year has already been expanded.

    Plug Power said it received an order from Walmart for a seventh on site hydrogen fuel cell power solution branded as GenKey.

    Plug Power entered into a contract with Walmart back in February for six of its GenKey solutions consisting of GenDrive fuel cells, GenFuel infrastructure construction and hydrogen fuel supply and GenCare on-site maintenance.

  • Brand Keys: Back-to-school spending to rise 9%

    New York - Households with school-aged children (pre-school through 12th grade) plan to spend more this year on back-to-school necessities with a predicted increase of 9 % for an average spend of $655, according to the 15th annual survey conducted by Brand Keys.

    Average anticipated spending in all major back-to-school categories reflect higher levels from 2013:

    Clothing: $348 (+16%)
    Shoes (athletic & dress) $127 (+15%)
    Supplies $ 89 (+13%)
    Computers/Electronics/
    Tablets/Smartphones: $213 (+12%)

  • Report: Meijer focuses on apparel

    Grand Rapids. Mich. – Meijer is reportedly focusing on making its apparel, footwear and accessories assortment more appealing to fashion-conscious customers. According to the Detroit News, Meijer is taking steps including redesigning its stores, hiring outside consultants and launching a multimedia marketing campaign to improve the appeal of apparel and related categories.

  • Survey: Teens, young adults love shopping, personalization, deals

    Cleveland -- Shopping ranks as a favorite activity among nearly half of all teens and young adults aged 13 to 24. According to a new survey of more than 1,000 teens and young adults ranging from ages 13 to 24 conducted by Alexander Babbage in partnership with Forest City Enterprises Inc., shopping at malls ranked above a virtual shopping experience among the entire group, with the 13-to-17-year-old age group showing the strongest preference for a bricks-and-mortar shopping experience.

  • Dollar Tree, Family Dollar create juggernaut with $8.5 billion merger

    Chesapeake, Va. - In a merger that will shake up the dollar store retail vertical, Dollar Tree is acquiring Family Dollar for $8.5 billion in cash and stock. The resulting company will operate more than 13,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada, with an annual sales volume of $18 billion.

  • Study: Global e-commerce to reach $1.47 trillion

    New York – Business-to-consumer e-commerce sales are expected to reach $14.7 trillion globally in 2014, up about 20% from $1.23 trillion in 2013. According to a new study from EMarketer, this figure will gradually increase to almost $2.36 trillion in 2018.

  • Children's Place board member passes away

    The Children's Place has announced that Lou Lipschitz, a member of its board of directors and chair of the audit committee, has died.

    "We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend, colleague and trusted advisor Lou Lipschitz. Lou's financial leadership, and passion for our business, enriched our company and our board, and we will dearly miss his dedication, grace and wonderful sense of humor," Norman Matthews, The Children's Place chairman of the board, said.
