  • Rite Aid's pharmacy, Rx sales rise

    CAMP HILL, Pa. — Overall same-store sales at Rite Aid decreased during March while pharmacy and prescription sales increased, the pharmacy retailer said Thursday.

    Compared with last year, front-end same-store sales decreased by 1.8% during the four-week period that ended March 26, which the 4,711-store chain attributed to Easter falling on a later date this year, April 24, than last year, when it occurred on April 4.

  • Nordstrom Rack to open in Boise, Idaho

    Seattle -- Nordstrom announced plans to open a Nordstrom Rack in Boise, Idaho.

    The 37,000-sq.-ft. store will be part of the Boise Towne Plaza shopping center and is expected to open in spring 2012.

  • How high is up in China

    With 329 stores in China producing $7.5 billion in sales annually, Walmart has experienced dramatic growth since it entered the market in 1996 with two stores. Last year, the company pursued its most aggressive expansion to date with the opening of 49 stores, and at a meeting for financial analysts earlier this week in Shenzhen, China, senior executives detailed plans to get a lot bigger.

  • Report: Wal-Mart details China plans

    New York City -- Wal-Mart Stores plans to expand its presence in the smaller cities of China, Ed Chan, CEO and president of the company’s China operations, said today at an investor meeting by video conference, Bloomberg reported.

    The discounter may also buy more land to build stores in China, which it predicted will be the world’s largest grocery market by 2014, according to the report. Wal-Mart is building its seventh Sam’s Club outlet in the northeastern port city of Dalian, on the first plot of land it bought in the country.

  • Ebay thinks local

    SAN FRANCISCO -- Ebay announced that it has added a new feature to Ebay.com that will allow shoppers to check product and merchandise availability at local retailers. The feature is made possible through Ebay's partnership with Milo, the leading local shopping engine that Ebay acquired last year.

  • Report ranks 50 most valuable U.S. retail brands

    New York City -- Walmart, Target, The Home Depot, Best Buy and CVS took top honors in Interbrand’s annual ranking of the 50 most valuable U.S. retail brands. The U.S. brands are valued in collaboration with Interbrand Design Forum, the retail experience group within Interbrand.

  • Madison Marquette encores retail business incubator program

    San Francisco -- Madison Marquette has announced the return of its retail business incubator program it calls Retail Star.

    As part of the program, Madison Marquette is on the hunt for the third consecutive year to find entrepreneurs with new viable retail concepts.

    The competition returns to Bayfair Center, in San Leandro, Calif., and kicks-off for the first time this year at Bay Street, in Emeryville, Calif., according to Madison Marquette.

  • JoS. A. Bank posts record profit in fiscal 2010

    Hampstead, Md. -- JoS. A. Bank Clothiers reported Wednesday that net income for fiscal year 2010 leaped 21% to a record $85.8 million, compared with $71.2 million in the year-ago period.

    Net sales surged 11.4% to a record of $858.1 million in fiscal year 2010, compared with $770.3 million in fiscal year 2009.

    Same-store sales increased 7%.
