  • BTS shoppers don’t know what they don’t know

    Retailers who release monthly sales next Thursday will offer fresh insight and hard numbers on back-to-school shoppers’ early season spending behavior and that’s a good thing because so far opinions offered by forecasters are all over the place.

    Back in early July, Customer Growth Partners said seasonal sales would grow by 6.2% to $467 billion, the most since 2006, despite economic headwinds.

  • Rite Aid's comps grow in July

    CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid’s same-store sales increased by 1.9% in July, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

    During the four-week period ended July 23, comp sales jumped 3.1% on the front end and 1.4% in the pharmacy, including a 151 basis point reduction resulting from introduction of new generic drugs. Prescription counts decreased by 0.4%. Total sales during the four-week period were about $1.92 billion, a 1.6% increase over July 2010.

  • Take that Borders! Amazon posts record 2Q sales

    SEATTLE - The nation’s leading online retailer late Tuesday reported a 51% increase in sales and better-than-expected profits as liquidation of former rival Borders began.

    If it wasn’t already apparent, the juxtaposition of these events in the same week is a harsh reminder that pure-play online retailers have the ability to render conventional brick-and-mortar chains, or large segments of their business, obsolete despite efforts by the latter to pursue multichannel strategies that leverage physical infrastructures.

    WAYNE, N.J.— Amazon, which reported record 2Q sales, will get even more help boosting its bottom line now that Toys"R"Us will start selling the online retailer's popular Kindle e-reader.

  • Walmart.com swims the video stream

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Blockbuster and Netflix may face new competition from Walmart, as the retailer announced that it will launch digital online movie rental and video streaming through its acquired Vudu service. 

    The retailer is now offering 20,000 titles that can be viewed on almost any device with Internet access, from PCs to televisions to Sony's PlayStation3 and other Blu-Ray disc players.

  • Sales down at RadioShack as company reworks wireless offerings

    FORT WORTH, Texas — RadioShack reported that total net sales and operating revenues from continuing operations for the 2011 second quarter were $941.9 million, compared with $962.3 million for the 2010 second quarter.  According to the company, the decrease in total net sales and operating revenues for the 2011 second quarter was driven by a $76.1 million decrease in sales generated by U.S. company-operated stores.  

  • Meijer opens small concept store in Chicago

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer announced that it is opening a new concept store in the Chicago suburb of Melrose park that will provide a tailored grocery offering and a broad variety of general merchandise.

    Called Meijer Marketplace, the new store will be 96,000 sq. ft., about half the size of Meijer's largest supercenters.
