  • Nordstrom Rack to open in Farmington, Conn.

    New York City -- Nordstrom plans to open a Nordstrom Rack in Farmington, Conn., located just outside of Hartford. This will be the first Nordstrom Rack in Connecticut.

    The new 35,000 sq-ft. store is scheduled to open during spring 2012 at West Farm Shopping Center.
     

  • Opponents seeking a second chance in South Africa

    The ministers of economic development, trade and industry and agriculture, forestry and fisheries in South Africa are protesting the nation’s Competition Tribunal’s approval of a merger agreement between Walmart and Massmart. The three government entities are seeking to set aside a ruling that allowed Walmart to acquire a 51% ownership stake in Massmart last month on the grounds that the tribunal acted irregularly with regard to matters of documents presented during the discovery process and the scheduling of decisions.

    NEW YORK— Target, Kohl's and JCPenney ranked highest among discounters in consumer perception in the first half of 2011, according to YouGov BrandIndex. The company interviews 5,000 people each weekday from a representative U.S. population sample, more than 1.2 million interviews per year.

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores announced that it has named Christopher Nielsen to the position of VP loss prevention. Nielsen will report to Bryan Venberg, SVP human resources.

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores said Thursday that it has named Christopher Nielsen to the position of VP -- loss prevention.

    Nielsen will report to Bryan Venberg, senior VP – human resources.

    He began his career at Family Dollar in 1998 as regional loss-prevention director, and was promoted to regional VP in 2001.

    Washington, D.C. – Back-to-school sales are expected to be flat this coming season, according to the 2011 Back-to-School survey, issued Thursday by the National Retail Federation and conducted by BIGresearch. The study showed that families with children in grades K-12 will spend an average of $603.63 on apparel, school supplies and electronics, a few dollars short of last year’s $606.40 average.

    WASHINGTON — NRF reported that total back-to-school spending on grades K to 12 is expected to reach $22.8 billion. According to NRF’s 2011 Back-to-School survey conducted by BIGresearch, families with children in grades K to 12 will spend an average of $603.63 on apparel, school supplies and electronics, within a few dollars of last year’s $606.40 average.
