  • Family Dollar names VP

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar announced that it has named Holly Shaskey-Platek to the position of senior VP – merchandising. She will lead the home, apparel and seasonal divisions.

    Prior to joining Family Dollar in 2008 as a consultant to provide company-wide change management leadership, Holly spent a total of 25 years with Target Corp. and ShopNBC.
     

  • Nordstrom Rack plans new store in Boston

    Seattle -- Nordstrom Inc. will open its outlet format Nordstrom Rack at The Newbury in Boston’s Back Bay area.

    The two-level, 38,000-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to open in spring 2013. It will replace the former Filene’s Basement space.

    Currently, Nordstrom opens four full-line stores and four Nordstrom Racks in the Boston market.

    Walmart saw its low price supremacy challenged this week by a Bloomberg report indicating Target had lower prices on a basket of 150 comparable items.

  • Target Facebook campaign raises $2.5 million for schools

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target's charitable Facebook campaign garnered more than three million votes in leas than four weeks, the company reported. Through its Give With Target campaign, the company was able to reach its goal of awarding $2.5 million in Target gift cards to schools across the country two weeks earlier than planned.

  • Big Lots profit takes hit in Q2; announces executive changes

    Columbus, Ohio -- Big Lots reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended July 28 slipped to $22.1 million, from $35.7 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales in the United States edged up 1.7% to $1.18 billion, from $1.16 billion, and domestic same-store sales decreased 1.9% for the quarter.

    In Canada, the company recorded a loss for the quarter of $3.3 million, widened from its loss of $1.2 million last year.

  • Report: H&M to go big in New York City

    New York -- H&M will open its largest store in the world, on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, Women’s Wear Daily reported.

    The company will open a six-level, 57,000-sq.-ft. store on Fifth Avenue at the corner of 48th Street sometime next year, according to the report.
     

  • Walmart.com traffic outpaced Amazon.com in July

    Walmart.com still has a lot of ground to make up on Amazon.com, but July was a step in the right direction as the company added more unique visitors and grew at a faster pace than Amazon.com.

    The number of unique visitors to Walmart.com increased 16.8% I to 45.2 million and placed the company 23 on a top 50 Web properties report compiled monthly by the online measurement firm comScore Media Metrix. During July of 2011, Walmart.com ranked 25th with 38.7 million unique visitors.

  • Fred’s profit rises in Q2

    Memphis -- Fred’s reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended July 28 rose 19% to $6.1 million, compared with $5.1 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales rose 4% to $470.8 million from $452.7 million, and same-store sales dipped 1%.

    Profit results missed Wall Street expectations, and the discounter has lowered its full-year earnings forecast.
