  • Walmart Neighborhood Market opens at Esplanade Shopping Center

    Oxnard, Calif. -- Brixmor Property Group announced the grand opening on November 14 of a 32,906-sq.-ft. Walmart Neighborhood Market at Esplanade Shopping Center, located in Oxnard, Calif.

    Walmart Neighborhood Market will be celebrating its opening only weeks following the grand opening of another new retailer at Esplanade Shopping Center, Dick’s Sporting Goods.

    Dollar General’s 10,000 plus locations will be open Thanksgiving Day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., but it’s not taking the heat for doing so like rivals Walmart and Target.

    Dollar General on Monday announced a series of online and in-store promotions, including special opening hours, designed to establish it as a holiday destination for gift givers as opposed to a convenient located stores that sell consumables.

  • Work more, save more – Walmart extends worker discounts

    Walmart has taken heat for violating some unwritten retail rule about not opening on Thanksgiving, but on Thursday it extended a benefit that many employees will find appealing.

    Walmart has long offered employees a 10% discount on general merchandise, which is pretty hefty considering prices are already low. That discount is in place all year and then in December employees could also save 10% on food.

  • Ross Stores profit rises 11% in Q3, sales miss

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Ross Stores Inc. reported Thursday that net income rose 10.8% to $159.5 million in the third quarter, compared with $144 million a year earlier.

    Revenue rose 10.6% to $2.26 billion, missing Wall Street’s expected $2.34 billion in revenue. Same-store sales climbed 5%.

    The retailer has reaffirmed its guidance for the fourth quarter.

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for families this holiday season.

    The company plans to have in stock hundreds of toys and gifts priced at $10 or less at its more than 7,000 nationwide locations. The single price point strategy is designed to appeal to the large segment of shoppers hard-hit by the economy and who need stretch their holiday budgets.

  • Walmart Q3 sales miss Street, profit rises year-over-year

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported Thursday net income of $3.64 billion for the quarter ended Oct. 31, up from $3.34 billion in the year-ago period.

    Sales rose 3.4% to $113.20 billion, as U.S. sales beat internal expectations but overall missed Wall Street’s expected $114.96 in revenue.

    Wal-Mart U.S. saw same-store sales rise 1.5%, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of same-store sales growth after nine straight quarterly declines. At Sam’s Club, same-store sales rose 2.7%, excluding fuel.
