  • Birchbox puts together team for brick-and-mortar expansion

    Judging by its recent executive appointments, online beauty subscription retailer Birchbox is getting more and more serious about expanding in the physical space.

    The company has named Benjamin Fay as VP of retail development and customer experience, with responsibility for translating the Birchbox brand experience into store design and overseeing execution of the retailer’ s off-line growth.

  • Kohl’s has a heck of a week

    With all the attention focused on generally strong online holiday sales during “Cyber Week” (Nov. 23-29), it may be instructive to look at the experience of one major retailer.

  • ShopperTrak: In-store sales decline need to be viewed in context

    In-store sales declines over Black Friday weekend had many analysts buzzing about the future of brick and mortar. But an expert in store traffic cautioned that the declines should be taken with a grain of salt.

    “It’s important to view the decrease in context,” said Bill Martin, founder, ShopperTrak.

    Martin noted that where are several contributing factors, including fewer available store hours on Thanksgiving Day and a later Hanukah that is anticipated to push sales into December.

  • Connecticut's first Bass Pro Shops opens in $750M mixed-use Steelpointe Harbor

    Bridgeport Landing Development, a subsidiary of The RCI Group announced that Connecticut’s first Bass Pro Shops has opened at Steelpointe Harbor located in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

    The Steelpointe Harbor Bass Pro Shops is a 150,000 sq. ft. store featuring Uncle Bucks Fish Bowl and Grill restaurant, Black Widow Billiards™ parlor complete with two tournament pool tables, a bowling alley with 12 full lanes, an archery range and aquarium.

  • Nordstrom Rack on the move

    Nordstrom Rack, the off-price division of Nordstrom, continues its expansion, announcing two new upcoming locations.

    The retailer plans to open a 28,000-sq.-ft. store at Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont, Ill., in fall 2016. The property is owned by Macerich.

  • Report: FTC ready to block Staples, Office Depot deal

    The Federal Trade Commission is poised to block Staples Inc.’s proposed take-over of rival Office Depot, according to the New York Post.

    The newspaper reported that federal regulators are "leaning against the deal and are preparing to block it."

    According to the report, the FTC is mostly concerned that a merger between the two office supply retailers will result in a single nationwide giant to serve big corporate and government clients.

    The FTC has until Dec. 8 to decide whether to sue to halt the deal after extending its review.

  • Retail forecast 2016

    How will retailers fare in 2016? Very well, according to experienced market watchers.

    “We expect core retail sales to grow 5.3% in 2016,” says Scott Hoyt, senior director of consumer economics for Moody’s Analytics, a research firm based in West Chester, Pa. (Core retail sales exclude volatile revenues from auto sales and gas stations.)

    That is notably faster than the 4.2% rate anticipated when 2015 sales are finally tallied. The 2015 experience was, again, slightly better than that the 3.9% growth of 2014.
