  • Sainsbury’s Argos acquisition boosts digital reach

    By the holidays, customers of J Sainsbury Plc will be able to take advantage of more mobile capabilities.   Leveraging its acquisition of the Home Retail Group, which closed last month, Sainsbury will begin adding Argos branches or click-and-collect distribution points inside almost all of its stores, according to a recent Bloomberg article.  
  • Hhgregg joins other retailers in closing on Thanksgiving

    Hhgregg Inc. is the latest retailer to give its store employees off for Thanksgiving Day.   The appliances and consumer electronics retailer announced it will close its 220 stores on the holiday, and reopen them at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.  To date, approximately 42 national retailers and the nation’s largest mall have announced they will not be open on turkey day (see list at end of story.)  
  • Crafting retailer names head merchant

    Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has appointed a permanent chief merchandising officer.    Sharyn Hejcl has been promoted to executive VP, chief merchandising officer. For the past year, Hejcl served as the interim head of merchandising in conjunction with her role as senior VP, inventory management and supply chain. She will continue to report to the chain’s president and CEO Jill Soltau.  
  • Ross Stores continues aggressive expansion

    It’s shaping up as a busy fall for Ross Stores.   The retailer is opening 25 Ross Dress for Less ("Ross") stores and nine dd's Discounts stores across 16 different states in September and October.   The new locations round out the company's expansion plans to add approximately 90 locations in 2016.  
  • Sears’ loyalty members get ‘holiday bonus’

    Sears is launching a new program designed to give its loyal shoppers the best shot at holiday promotions.    Members of the chain’s Shop Your Way loyalty program will get a jump on their holiday shopping during this weekend’s “Sears Days Lowest Prices of the Season Member Bonus Event.” However, there is always a chance these items could be further discounted as the holiday season ramps up.   
  • Electronics chain extends private label card partnership

    Hhgregg is ensuring its shoppers retain their buying power.   By entered into a multi-year renewal of its consumer financing program, Hhgregg is extending its 17-year partnership with Synchrony Financial. The electronics chain’s private label credit card program provides qualifying cardholders with special financing offers, exclusive in-store and online deals, and online bill pay. The card is accepted across the chain’s 220 stores, and online.   
  • Solid employment gains for retail industry

    The retail industry saw an increase of 10,000 jobs in September over August, according to the National Retail Federation.   The gains came as the Labor Department announced that the U.S. economy overall gained 156,000 jobs.  
  • Target’s latest partner is…

    Target Corp. is partnering with a hip design magazine on its new home collection.   The retailer will launch Modern by Dwell Magazine at select stores and online beginning Dec. 27. The collection will include more than 120 items, including furniture, décor, tabletop and home accessories, with products separated into indoor and outdoor collections.       Prices will range from $49.99 to $399.99 for furniture and $16.99 to $99.99 for décor, tabletop and accessories.
