  • Hot Canadian brand opens first U.S. store

    A popular goose from up north has landed in Manhattan.   Canada Goose, the 60-year-old brand best known for its signature goose-down jacket with Arctic Circle logo and fur-trimmed hood, has opened a flagship in the SoHo section of Manhattan. It is the company’s first-ever U.S. store and only second store to date, with the first opening in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre in October.

    Move over Amazon Marketplace — Crate and Barrel is moving onto your turf.   Crate and Barrel has expanded its online assortment by launching its own marketplace, which it describes as a highly curated selection of products based on Crate and Barrel's merchandising style. Shoppers enter the marketplace directly from the retailer’s website.  
  • Report: J. Crew mulls options for its popular Madewell brand

    J. Crew Group is reportedly considering options for its popular Madewell brand, which it launched in 2006.   According to Reuters, the retailer, which has struggled with slumping sales in its namesake division, is working with investment bank Lazard Ltd. to assess multiple strategic and balance sheet options for Madewell, which operates some 108 stores.

    Most experts agree that the busiest day of this year’s holiday shopping season is likely to be Saturday, Dec. 17. But what about shoppers who want to avoid the crowds?   According to RetailNext Inc., Tuesday, Nov. 29 will afford the widest berths in malls and stores.  
  • Upper 5th Avenue is most expensive retail street but rental value on decline

    Rental values on the two most expensive retail streets in the world have decreased as retailers balance the demands of physical and online shopping.   The upper part of Fifth Avenue (49th to 60th Streets) in Manhattan narrowly beat out Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay in DTZ/Cushman & Wakefield’s annual Main Streets Across the World report, which tracks 462 of the top retail streets around the globe, ranking them by their prime rental value.

  • President-elect hurting traffic at some major retail flagships

    Street closings and protests related to the election of Donald Trump are severely impacting retail traffic on the priciest retail corridor in the world.   Tiffany & Co., Abercrombie & Fitch, Henri Bendel, Polo Ralph Lauren and other retailers on Fifth Avenue are all being affected, according to the Associated Press.  
  • Unusual bedmates: Neiman Marcus joins up with digital fashion disruptor

    It’s an odd partnership — at least at first glance.   Neiman Marcus has entered into a partnership with Rent the Runway, which lets shoppers rent pricey designer dresses as opposed to buying them (at a luxe store like Neiman Marcus).
