  • IBM forecast: Home furnishings to see big gains in Q2

    Armonk, N.Y. -- An IBM analytics-based forecast released Thursday expects that sales of home furnishings in the United States will shoot higher in the second quarter, with in-store sales increasing nearly 8% to $23.2 billion and online sales increasing 28.4%.

    Combined in-store and online sales of home furnishings are expected to grow 16.6% in the second quarter.

  • Teavana, Ecco and Henri Hubert open at Westfield San Francisco Centre, Tiffany on deck

    San Francisco -- Westfield announced that Tiffany will open on level 1 of the center, next to Bloomingdale’s, in fall 2012.

    The luxury jewelry will join just-opened tea purveyor Teavana, Danish footwear retailer Ecco and men’s apparel store Henri Hubert San Francisco.

    Chocolate house Ghirardelli will open a new store -- Chirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop -- in April, and Marbles: The Brain Store will open in the summer.

    Francesca’s Collection is under construction.

  • Retailers raise outlook on better-than-expected March sales

    NEW YORK — Target Corp., The TJX Cos., and Ross Stores reported stronger-than-expected March sales as warm weather put consumers in a spending mood. Both retailers also revised their first-quarter outlooks upward on the results.

    Target said its same-stores sales rose 7.3% in March, helped by warm weather. Analysts had predicted a 5.4% increase.

  • Warm weather gives apparel retailers and department stores a boost in March

    New York -- Many apparel retailers and department stores registered solid gains in March, as an early spring brought out shoppers looking for seasonal merchandise earlier than they typically would. Last month was the warmest March in North America in more than 50 years, according to weather data provider Planalytics.

    Macy’s, Kohl’s Corp., Limited Brands and Gap Inc. were among the retailers who topped analyst estimates.

  • Bed, Bath & Beyond Q4 up 24%; will open 40 stores in fiscal 2012

    Union, N.J. -- Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.’s profit in the fourth quarter rose to $351.0 million, from $283.5 million a year ago.

    Revenue for the quarter ended Feb. 25 increased 9.1% to $2.73 billion. Same-store sales were up 6.8%.

    In a conference call with analysts, the chain said it anticipates opening a total of 40 stores across all its concepts this fiscal year.
     

  • Unseasonable weather warms up March sales

    March was a good month for retailers overall, as an early spring brought out shoppers looking for seasonal merchandise earlier than they typically would. Last month was the warmest March in North America in more than 50 years, according to weather data provider Planalytics. 

    Target, TJX and Ross Stores all reported stronger-than-expected March sales.

  • Sears looks to expand signature brands outside stores

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears Holdings Corp. has appointed Leveraged Marketing Corp. of America as its exclusive global licensing agent as it looks to capitalize on, and ways to sell, its signature Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard brands outside its own stores.

    Sears said it will work closely with Leveraged Marketing to identify, evaluate and manage licensing opportunities around the world.

  • Target March madness: Comps increase 7.3%

    For the second month in a row Target’s same-store sales were nearly double the expected amount and the company increased its first quarter guidance as a result.

    Same-store sales increased 7.3%, with half of the increase driven by growth in average transaction size combined with an increase in comparable-store transactions. Overall comparable-store sales in March 2011 decreased 5.5%.
