  • Safeway Ok’s $1 billion stock buyback program

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. said Monday it approved a $1 billion stock buyback program.

    The operator of grocery chains such as Safeway, Vons and Dominick's had about $400 million remaining under its stock repurchase program, through Feb. 22. The buyback authorization does not have an expiry date.

  • Pinkberry partners with Micros Systems to implement Google Wallet

    Columbia, Md. -- Micros Systems, a provider of information technology solutions for the hospitality and retail industries, has partnered with yogurt retailer Pinkberry to implement Google Wallet. The system, which allows Pinkberry customers to tap their device on an NFC (Near Field Communications) reader to quickly make their purchase and simultaneously redeem coupons and receive discounts, is now live in 69 Pinkberry locations in the United States.

    New Canaan Conn. -- Gridiron Capital, LLC, in partnership with the founder and existing  management team of Quality Sollutions Inc. announced the acquisition of QSI.

  • First Data issues report on gift card usage

    New York -- The average gift card dollar volume growth on a year-over-year basis increased 10% during the last six months of 2011, with consumers shopping earlier in the holiday season for prepaid cards and adding more value to their purchases than in 2010, according to a study by First Data Corp.

  • List details world’s ‘most ethical’ companies; 15 retailers make cut

    Austin, Texas -- Target Corp., Costco Wholesale Corp., Safeway, Gap Inc. and Whole Foods Market are among 15 retailers recognized on the Ethisphere Institute's 2012 "World's Most Ethical Companies" list. The other retailers honored were Starbucks Coffee Co., Patagonia, Wegmans, Marks and Spencer, Best Buy, eBay, Timberland, Office Max, Petco, and Ten Thousand Villages.

  • Safeway, Target, OfficeMax among "most ethical" companies

    NEW YORK — The Ethisphere Institute, which describes itself as a leading international think-tank dedicated to the creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anti-corruption and sustainability, has released its sixth annual selection of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. Among this year's list of 145 organizations are several top, U.S. retailers including Safeway, Wegmans, Whole Foods, Costco, Target, Best Buy, OfficeMax and Petco.

  • Casey's launches Kentucky expansion

    Ankeny, Iowa -- Casey’s General Stores said Thursday that it will break ground on its first site in Kentucky later this month. This store will be located in Cadiz, Ky., and will mark the 12th state in which the c-store chain operates.

    The Cadiz store is slated to open summer 2012, and will be followed by additional stores in Paducah and Henderson later this year, said the company.

    Casey’s said it also has land under contract in Tennessee with plans to break ground next fiscal year as well.

  • ICSC Study: U.S. office workers provide daytime selling opportunities

    New York City -- A study released Wednesday by the International Council of Shopping Centers found that determining what office workers spend going to work, during the business day, and immediately after work prior to returning home can provide a better understanding of the opportunities that exist for retail, restaurant, and service establishments in proximity to office parks or buildings.
