MODESTO, Calif. — Save Mart Supermarkets on Wednesday announced the hiring of Brett Wing as VP FoodMaxx operations. Wing comes from Cub Foods/Supervalu in Hudson, Wis., and brings 35 years of grocery store and senior management experience, the grocer stated.

St. Louis -- Save-A-Lot announced plans for a new 250,374-sq.-ft. food distribution center in Pompano Beach, Fla.

The center located is expected to open by the end of fiscal year 2013 (FY13 ends February 23, 2013) and employ more than 30 employees initially, with the potential for hiring additional employees once the facility is at full capacity. The project is the result of collaboration with KTR Capital Partners and Butters Construction.
 

Bellevue, Wash. -- Coinstar, best known for its Redbox movie rental and its namesake coin-counting kiosks, and Seattle’s Best Coffee, part of Starbucks Coffee Co., have entered into an agreement to roll out Coinstar's new Rubi coffee kiosk in groceries, drug stores and mass merchants. The kiosks will feature a variety of Seattle's Best Coffee beverages.

The rollout will begin this summer, with approximately 500 kiosks expected by the end of the year and thousands of machines in place during the next several years.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar is getting the Redbox treatment.

The discount store chain announced it inked a multiyear deal with the Coinstar subsidiary, through which Redbox kiosks will be installed at Family Dollar locations across the United States. Family Dollar customers will be able to rent new release DVDs at Redbox for $1.20 a night, Blu-ray discs for $2 a night and games for $2 a night.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday posted May sales of nearly $6 billion, a decrease of 1.6% as compared with the same month in fiscal year 2011.

WASHINGTON — Organized retail crime is a growing concern for all retailers, with a staggering 96% reporting that their company has been the victim of a crime in the past year, according to NRF's Organized Retail Crime Survey. This number is up from 94.5% in the past year.  In addition, 87.7% say ORC activity in the United States has grown over the past three years.

Washington, D.C. -- The National Retail Federation released Tuesday the Top 10 cities for organized retail crime activity.

Topping the list is Atlanta. The other nine are:

Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens reported Tuesday that net sales for the month of May dropped 1.6% to $5.98 billion, compared with $6.08 billion in the year-ago period.

Total front-end sales edged up 0.3%, and same-store sales dipped 1%.

Total sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2012 were $17.77 billion, down 3.3% from $18.37 billion in the third quarter last year.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores said Tuesday it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Coinstar to provide Redbox kiosks at Family Dollar locations across the United States.

Charlotte, N.C. -- Harris Teeter Supermarkets entered into an agreement with Lowe’s Food Stores whereby Harris Teeter will acquire 10 Lowes locations in the central Carolinas region and Lowes Foods acquiring six Harris Teeter store locations in western North Carolina.

In addition to the six Harris Teeter stores, Harris Teeter has agreed to pay Lowes Foods $26.5 million. The transaction is expected to be completed in the company’s third quarter of fiscal 2012, which ends July 1, 2012.
