  • Dunkin’ Donuts runs New Year’s Twitter sweepstakes

    Canton, Mass. - Dunkin' Donuts has launched a special New Year's Twitter sweepstakes. Beginning Dec. 29 and continuing through Wednesday, Dec. 31, followers of @DunkinDonuts will be asked a New Year's themed-question each day.   Consumers who tweet an answer using the special hashtag #DDNewYearSweeps will be entered to win one of three daily prizes of Dunkin' Donuts coffee for a year. In addition, each day 15 participants will be randomly selected to receive a $100 mobile gift prize.
  • Family Dollar delays vote on Dollar Tree; good news for Dollar General

    New York City - In not-unexpected news, Family Dollar has delayed its shareholder vote on a potential acquisition by Dollar Tree; the vote is now slated for Jan. 22, and analysts say this could bode well for a potential deal with industry giant Dollar General.   Family Dollar convened as planned on Tuesday and, based on insufficient votes, subsequently adjourned its Special Meeting of Stockholders on the proposed transaction with Dollar Tree.  
  • Albertson’s and Safeway to sell 146 stores to Haggen

    Boise, Idaho – As part of divestures to receive FTC clearance of their proposed January 2015 merger, AB Acquisitions Inc. (Albertsons) and Safeway Inc. will sell 146 stores to Pacific Northwest grocery chain Haggen. With this acquisition, which remains subject to FTC approval, Haggen will expand from 18 stores with 16 pharmacies to 164 stores with 106 pharmacies.
  • Wal-Mart’s Latin American chief to also serve as CEO of Mexican unit

    Mexico City - Wal-Mart de Mexico said that that Enrique Ostale, Walmex chairman and Latin America CEO for Wal-Mart Stores, will also take over as CEO of the Mexican company, effective January 1.  
  • Walmex bank division sells for $247 million

    Mexico City, Mexico - Grupo Financiero Inbursa, a banking firm owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, has reportedly bought the bank division of Wal-Mart de Mexico (Walmex) for $246.94 million, or 1.7 times Walmex’s bank capital.

     

    According to Reuters, Walmex has been focusing on selling its non-core assets, such as its restaurant division, in the past year.

  • Couche-Tard buys Pantry for $1.7 billion

    Cary, N.C. – Canadian convenience store conglomerate Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., which operates stores under the Circle K banner in the U.S., has agreed to purchase The Pantry Inc., operator of the Kangaroo Express convenience/fuel chain, for $1.7 billion. Purchase price includes $861 million in cash and about $840 million in assumed debt.  
  • CST, CrossAmerica jointly buy 22 Timewise convenience stores

    San Antonio, Texas - CST Brands Inc and CrossAmerica Partners LP have agreed to jointly purchase 22 convenience stores in San Antonio and Austin, Texas from Landmark Industries, their third combined acquisition in less than three months. The 22 stores operate under the Timewise brand name and provide Shell-branded fuel.   
  • Report: The Pantry readies for sale

    Cary, N.C. – Things are hopping at convenience store/gas station chain The Pantry Inc. According to the Wall Street Journal, the operator of Kangaroo Express and other convenience store banners is preparing to sell itself and already took bids in an auction run by a private investment bank the week of Dec. 8.  
  • Bob Evans CEO resigns

    New Albany, Ohio – Steve Davis has resigned as CEO of Bob Evans Farms Inc. by mutual agreement with the board of directors. The official change will take place immediately, but Davis will remain with the company through the end of the year to assist with the transition process.  
  • PetSmart agrees to $8.7 billion buyout

    Phoenix – PetSmart Inc. has agreed to be purchased for about $8.7 billion by a consortium of buyers led by private equity firm B.C. Partners and also including pension fund manager La Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and private equity firm StepStone. The total figure represents an acquisition price of $83 per share, a 39% premium over PetSmart’s closing price on July 2, 2014.
