  • First Look: Target’s new 'Connected Living' in-store pilot

    Target Corp. is testing some of the concepts from its innovative Open House format in San Francisco in a traditional store setting.   The discounter has debuted Connected Living, an in-store experience dedicated to showing customers how connected products can work together to make life easier, more convenient and more efficient. The test is taking place in Target’s Ridgedale location in Minnetonka, Minnesota.   
  • Study: The ins and outs of online shopping

    E-commerce is generally popular with consumers, but some offerings are better received than others.
     
    According to the Walker Sands 2016 Future of Retail Study, based on a survey of more than 1,400 U.S. respondents, most consumers shop online with some level of frequency. Forty percent shop online once or more a month, 21% one- to two-times a week, and 7% three or more times a week. This means that about two-thirds (68%) shop online at least monthly, while only 4% shop online one- to three-times a year.
     

  • Study: Improving economy helps some retail verticals

    Consumers are being choosy about where they are spending extra money that is becoming available with the end of the recession.
     
    According to a new study from Mintel, more than two in five (44%) Americans describe their financial situations as "healthy" in 2016, compared to 37% in 2015 and 33% in 2013, indicating that improvements in the economy are being felt at a household level. However, different retail categories are receiving the benefit more than others.
     

  • Baker Katz redevelops Texas center

    Houston-based Baker Katz has redeveloped and fully leased a retail site in Beaumont, Texas.
     
    Baker Katz principal Kenneth Katz made the announcement.
     
    Baker Katz completely redeveloped the site, beginning with demolishing the previous building with an end plan to create five new spaces for retail tenants. Starbucks, Mattress One and Wingstop will occupy the 6,100-sq.-ft. building. T-Mobile and Access Dental will each have 2,800-sq.-ft. in the second building. There is a new H-E-B located immediately east of the property.
     

  • Another retail CFO moves on

    Another day, another finance chief at a well-known retailer is leaving.

    Jane Hamilton Nielsen, CFO at Coach Inc., will be departing the company to pursue another opportunity. In order to facilitate a smooth transition, Nielsen is expected to stay into August 2016. The company is commencing a search for her permanent successor with Crist Kolder Associates. Andrea Shaw Resnick, global head of investor relations and corporate communications, will be appointed interim CFO until a permanent appointment is made.

  • Survey ranks fastest emerging global retail markets

    Retailers looking for global opportunities in emerging markets should head to Asia, particularly China, according to a just-released survey.   

    China ranks as the top country in A.T. Kearney’s 2016 Global Retail Development Index (GRDI), followed by India, whose high market potential, fast growth, improved regulatory environment, and ease of doing business pulled it up to second in the rankings.   • Top Best Buy exec cuts stake in company

    Hubert Joly, CEO of Best Buy Inc., is doing a little diversification of his personal stock portfolio.

    Bloomberg reports that as of June 2, Joly has sold 398,000 shares of Best Buy stock, or 44% of his roughly 910,000 company shares, for $12.8 million.

    The retailer said Joly is not exploring other opportunities and has no plans to leave his current position.

  • GameStop makes customer loyalty more rewarding

    GameStop is making some changes to its PowerUp Rewards loyalty program.
     
    Starting June 6, all U.S. members can choose to save their points and make selections from the PowerUp Rewards catalog or receive $5, $10 or $15 reward certificates that can be used to make purchases in any GameStop store. Members can enroll at any GameStop store and manage their accounts online or within the free GameStop mobile app.
