  • Sam's pushes membership at open house

    Sam's Club held an open house Jan. 11 to Jan. 13 to show its support for small businesses nationwide.

    During the event, guests could take advantage of deals usually only afforded to members. For example, a HP G72 Notebook with 17.3” HP BrightView LED display, Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor, 4GB Memory, 320 GB hard drive2 was being offered for $499 and a gallon ProForce Pine Cleaner and Deodorizer was going for $4.58.

  • Focus on Global Retailing

    More than one-third of the world’s 250 largest retailers suffered a decline in sales in fiscal 2009 (encompasses June 2009 through June 2010), according to the Global Powers of Retailing 2011 report, whose results were revealed at the National Retail Federation’s Annual Convention & Expo in New York City. The annual report, from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, identifies the largest 250 retailers around the world, provides an outlook for the global economy and an analysis of market capitalization in the retail industry.

  • Sam’s is somewhere in the middle

    Rain and snow dealt the club channel a blow during December, as Costco was impacted by heavy rain in California and BJ’s felt the sting of blizzards in the Northeast. Sam’s was impacted too, but Costco and BJ’s have a higher concentration of stores in those areas so it is likely the effect was less.

  • Discount results a mixed bag as Target, Costco fall short and TJX outperforms

    New York City -- Discounters reported mixed results for December sales, with many, including Target Corp. and Costco Wholesale Corp., posting gains that fell below analysts’ expectations.

    Target Corp. said its same-store sales edged up 0.9%, well short of analyst expectations for a  4% increase. The chain said weaknesses in electronics, toys and some home categories offset strength in grocery and apparel items.

  • Rain and snow deal club channel blow

    Costco said its worldwide sales increased 11% to $9.19 billion for the five-week period ended Jan. 2 and total company same-store sales increased 6%. Same-store sales at Costco’s U.S. clubs increased 4%, or 3% if the effect of higher year-over-year fuel prices is excluded. Internationally, same-store sales increased 12%, but that figure was aided by currency exchange rates. Excluding the impact of exchange rates, international same-store sales increased 8%.

  • BJ’s closing five locations, restructuring home office and select field ops

    Natick, Mass. -- BJ’s Wholesale Club said Wednesday that its December same-store sales rose 3.8% and would have been up 1.4%, excluding the impact of gasoline sales. The results were short of analysts expectations. Separately, the company said it is shutting five underperforming locations by the end of January. as well as restructuring its home office and certain field operations. It is cutting 114 corporate-level jobs, 61 of them at the company's headquarters and 53 field positions.

  • A busy day for BJ's

    The New Year is off to a busy start at BJ’s Wholesale Club. Amid ongoing speculation about the retailer being a potential takeover target, BJ’s on Wednesday announced the closure of five clubs, several senior level personnel changes and released its December sales a day earlier than normal.
