  • Brand Keys: Back-to-school sales to decline; Amazon and Wal-Mart strong

    New York -- Households with school-age children (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade) plan a big cut-back in back-to-school spending. Results of the 2013 Brand Keys Back to School Report Card show that there will be a year-over-year decrease of 10% in back-to-school spending, or an average spend this year of just more than $600 per household.

    However, not every retailer will experience a decline in back-to-school profits. This year, the eight retailers showing the greatest increase in consumer intent-to-shop were:

  • Rue21 tries on new store format

    WARRENDALE, Pa. — Rue21, a leading specialty apparel retailer for young women and men, is trying out a new store format on for size, and about to give guys something to smile about in the process.

    The retailer has opened its first RueGuy stores in Bay Shore, N.Y., Harlingen, Texas, and New Boston, Ohio. The approximately 6,000-sq.-ft. stores are the first of seven RueGuy stores slated to open across the U.S. during August. The company is on target to open approximately 20 RueGuy stores by the end of the year.

  • NRF: Industry added 37,000 jobs in July

    Washington, D.C. -- The National Retail Federation said the retail industry added 37,000 jobs in the month of July, with increases in general merchandise, food and beverage and building and garden supply stores.

  • Converse, San Francisco

    The Converse flagship in San Francisco is not only the sneaker brand’s first Northern California location; it’s also its largest and most innovative location to date. The 8,200-sq.-ft. store, which features Converse’s full line-up of footwear, apparel and accessories, is big on personalization, with an interactive system for designing one-of-a-kind Converse sneakers and clothing.  

  • Sales increases at HSNi’s operating segments bolster Q2 results

    Net sale increases at HSNi’s HSN and Cornerstone operating segments had a favorable impact on the company’s total net sales, which increased 6% to $812.6 million for the second quarter ended June 30 from $767.2 for the same quarter last year.

    HSN’s 5% net sales increase to $526.2 million for the quarter, from $502 million for the same quarter last year, was due in part to lower return rates. The average price point decreased 4% while units shipped increased 7% primarily due to an increase in clearance activity.

  • Smashburger to Plymouth Meeting Mall

    Plymouth Meeting, Pa. — Smashburger plans to open a 2,700-sq.-ft. eatery at Plymouth Meeting Mall this fall. As of now, Smashburger has 187 corporate and franchised restaurants across the country.

    Anchored by Macy’s, Boscov’s and Whole Foods Market and Café, the mall features more than 100 specialty retailers and a long list of destination restaurants like Benihana, Bertucci’s, California Pizza Kitchen, Chipotle Mexican Grill and others.

     

  • Cache names new CFO

    New York -- Cache Inc. announced that Anthony DiPippa (“Tony”) will join the company as executive VP, CFO, on Aug. 7. He succeeds Margaret Feeney (“Maggie”), who has resigned from Cache, effective Aug. 1.

    DiPippa most recently was CFO of W. B. Mason, a $1.2 billion office products and furniture company.
