  • Former Walmart exec named CEO of Dots

    GLENWILLOW, Ohio — Fashion retailer Dots has named former Walmart SVP, Lisa Rhodes as its new CEO.

    Rhodes, who led Walmart's U.S. apparel merchandising division, has been charged with leading Dots’ march toward 1,000 stores.

    Prior to her role at Walmart, Rhodes was EVP and chief merchandising officer for Maurice’s.

  • Wal-Mart Mexico hit with new tax and money-laundering allegations

    Mexico City -- Multiple reports on Wednesday revealed that Wal-Mart Stores’ Mexican arm has been leveled with new allegations concerning tax evasion and money-laundering schemes.

    The accusations against Walmex were outlined in a letter by U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, sent Tuesday to Wal-Mart CEO Michael Duke and suggesting that the company “"may have had compliance issues relating not only to bribery, but also to 'questionable financial behavior' including tax evasion and money laundering in Mexico."

Now I’m seeing how brands like Target, Wal-Mart and Office Depot are rolling out smaller new store formats in urban environments, and it has me thinking about how this downsizing phenomenon might be even more important than many people realize.

    Retailers looking to add sparkle to this year’s Christmas season may want to take a new look at their gift card programs. Last year, more than half of consumers bought at least one gift card for the holidays, according to a report from First Data Corp., an Atlanta-based e-commerce processor.

    Indeed, consumers seem to be taking more of a shine than ever to these types of spending vehicles.

  • Soma Intimates to open at Willow Grove Park

    Willow Grove, Pa. -- Philadelphia-based Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust said that Soma Intimates will open a 2,369-sq.-ft. store this fall at Will Grove Park, located in Willow Grove, Pa.

    Accessory boutique Laila Rowe will also open this fall, in a 1,181-sq.-ft. space.

    Willow Grove Park is a three-level, 1.2 million-sq.-ft. regional shopping mall anchored by Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Sears and Nordstrom Rack.

    Foot Locker is kicking up its heels in the United Kingdom. The footwear giant has opened a new format — The Locker Room — with an eye to rolling it out throughout England and continental Europe. The concept expands Foot Locker’s core strength in athletic footwear to include apparel and accessories for a wide range of performance sports.

  • Midwest Gloves expands product lineup

    Max Performance is the name of new work glove from category leader Midwest Quality Gloves.

    The company announced the new product introduction this week and design enhancements to the Max Performance line illustrate just how far the category of work gloves has progressed.

    The new product features a suede leather palm with padded palm patches, a spandex back, fourchette finger design and an elastic wrist, all of which are designed to provide a form-fitting, high performance product.

  • AirSport to open at Discover Mills

    Lawrenceville, Ga. -- Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group said that entertainment destination AirSport Indoor Sports Facility has opened at Discover Mills in Lawrenceville, Ga., near Atlanta.

    This 20,000+-sq.-ft. location joins previously opened Black Diamond Skatepark, as well as a number of other retailers coming soon.
