  • Growing profits down on the farm

    BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Tractor Supply Company continues to operate in a fertile market segment that enabled the nation’s largest farm and ranch store chain to harvest record profits during the second quarter.

  • Poll finds consumers prefer organic foods

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. and WASHINGTON — When given a choice, American consumers prefer to purchase organic foods, according to the Thomson Reuters-NPR Health Poll. The survey found that 58% of Americans say they choose organic over conventionally produced foods when they have the opportunity, a number that spikes higher among both young and highly educated respondents. Sixty-three percent of respondents under the age of 35 prefer organic foods, as do 64% of those with a bachelor's degree or more.

  • Staples names new CIO

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Staples has announced the promotion of Christine Putur to CIO. In her new role, Putur will have global responsibility for information technology strategy and execution. Putur will report to John Mahoney, Staples vice chairman and CFO.

    "Chris has demonstrated great leadership at Staples," said Mahoney. "She has deep knowledge of our customers and company with proven ability to align information systems to business goals. Chris will drive the IT organization as an important part of our success in the years to come."

  • NPD: Kids want electronics and parents are buying

    PORT WASHINGTON — Consumer electronics are growing increasingly popular with children, as indicated by NPD's latest survey, which revealed that in the past year 78% of portable video game systems purchased, and 56% of portable digital media players (PDMP) purchased were given to the child. 

    For households with kids ages 4 to 14, newer devices such as e-readers and media tablets were acquired at single-digit rates (8% and 5%, respectively) in the past year, slowly driving up the number of homes where kids have access to these devices. 

  • 'Modern Family' star goes back-to-school with Staples

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Staples announced that Rico Rodriguez, of TV's "Modern Family" will star in the retailer's new back-to-school campaign. 

    "Staples is the top destination for back-to-school shopping with great deals all season long," said Jevin Eagle, EVP merchandising and marketing for Staples. "We have amazing deals and a huge selection of school supplies and technology for students."

  • Long-time JCPenney marketing chief retires

    PLANO, Texas  — JCPenney said Tuesday that its veteran marketing chief Mike Boylson has retired from the company. His successor will be selected by newly minted CEO Ron Johnson in what will be the former Apple executive’s first senior-level appointment at JCPenney.

    Boylson was with the department store chain for more than three decades, the last eight years as chief marketing officer. He said in June he would retire from the company on July 1, according to a JCPenney spokeswoman.

    NEW YORK — Kmart is changing its approach to fashion with a new campaign focused on individual style rather than name brands or trends. The campaign, titled "Money can't buy style," will debut this fall and will feature non-actors in Kmart looks they've created themselves.
