  • Holidays heating up, head in digital direction

    Retailers will be promoting early and often during the upcoming holiday season, especially with six fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and mobile is sure to play an even greater role this year than it did in 2012.

  • Michaels’ profit jumps 54%

    Irving, Texas -- Michaels Stores Inc.’s second-quarter profit soared 53.8% amid higher sales and lower interest expenses.

    The retailer reported a profit of $20 million for the quarter ended Aug. 3, compared with $13 million a year earlier.
    Sales inched up 1.3% to $904 million. Same-store sales fell 1.3%, due to a 3.6% decrease in transactions and a 0.4% decrease in deferred custom framing revenue, which was partially offset by a 2.7% increase in the company's average ticket.

  • Fred's ‘pleased’ with Q2 performance

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's experienced growth in sales, customer traffic, average ticket and gross margin for the second quarter ended Aug. 3.

    The company’s net income for the quarter was $3.3 million, or $0.09 per diluted share, compared with net income of $6.1 million, or $0.17 per diluted share, in the year-earlier period. However, the prior-year quarter included a benefit of approximately $4 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, for favorable tax credits. 

  • Gander Mountain to Bayport Commons in Oldsmar, Fla.

    New York -- Kite Realty Group has signed Gander Mountain into a 30,045-sq.-ft. space at Bayport Commons in Oldsmar, Fla., a northwest suburb of Tampa. CBRE represented Gander Mountain in the transaction.

    A Super Target, Michaels and PetSmart. Anchor the 276,918-sq.-ft. center. About 64,400 people live within a three-mile radius of the center. The estimated average household income is $71,200.
     

  • Avon sets sights on global expansion with new hire

    NEW YORK — Avon Products appointed Brian Salsberg as SVP of global strategy, effective Sept. 23. Salsberg will report to Sheri McCoy, Avon's CEO, and will join the company's executive committee.

  • Verizon: Enterprise cloud use reaches tipping point

    New York - The use of cloud-based enterprise storage and production applications, as well as enterprise spending on cloud technology, has increased in the past year to a tipping point. According to the Verizon 2013 State of the Enterprise Cloud Report, between January 2012 and June 2013 the use of cloud-based storage grew 90% and use of cloud-based memory increased 100%, mostly due to the shift of business-critical applications to the cloud.

  • DSW to test smaller format

    New York -- DSW plans to test a smaller-store format that will run about 10,000 sq. ft., down from its average 22,000-sq.-ft. model.

    DSW did not disclose where the tests would be. But CEO Mike McDonald told securities analysts that, if successful, the small-format stores “will create a new growth vehicle for DSW, which could significantly expand our store count potential,” Columbus Biz Insider reported.

    DSW is on track to open 30 stores in 2013.
