  • Mall of America lets the sun shine in with massive high-tech skylight

    A 3,500-sq.-ft. rotunda “smart” skylight has been installed in the new grand entrance and event space at the nation’s largest shopping mall. The new space is part of Mall of America’s 750,000-sq.-ft. expansion.

    The skylight is comprised of more than 300 panes of electronically tintable SageGlass, which controls sunlight to optimize daylight and enhance comfort by preventing glare and solar heat.

  • Macy’s posts disappointing Q3; pursuing real estate options (but no REIT) and outlet growth

    Macy’s Inc. on Wednesday blamed warm weather, weak tourist traffic and excessive inventory for the company's worse-than-expected third quarter results. The company said it will not pursue spinning off its properties into a real-estate investment trust, but that it is studying real estate options for some of its most iconic stores.

  • Falling gas prices no Grinch this Christmas

    A prolonged drop in gas prices is boosting hopes among retailers that consumers will spend more this holiday season.

    According to the latest Consumer Fuels Survey by the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), more than one in four (26%) consumers expect to increase their spending this month, a seven-point jump over the past month and the highest percentage this year. Last November, only 21% of consumers expected to increase their spending, according to the survey.

  • As Black Friday nears, retailers say yes to Turkey Day

    With a little over two weeks until Black Friday weekend, Best Buy, HHgregg and other retailers are hoping many U.S. consumers have made shopping after Thanksgiving dinner a holiday tradition.

    The consumer electronics retailers joined a growing list of retailers that released their Thanksgiving 
    plans this week. Both Best Buy and HHgregg have decided to keep their same holiday sales plans from last year.

  • Meijer pledges $400K to holiday toy program

     Any toy purchased at Meijer through Nov. 30 will help the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer grant a child's wish this holiday season.

    Meijer is once again donating a portion of customer purchases made in the toy department, up to $400,000, to children's gift-giving programs throughout the Midwest.

  • Report: Albertsons looking to buy stores from Haggen

    The Seattle Times is reporting that, according to court documents filed last week, Albertsons is currently bidding on 36 of 95 stores being sold by the now-bankrupt Haggen. Albertsons had previously sold 146 stores to Haggen as part of its acquisition of Safeway. [Seattle Times]
