  • Sam's Club promotes breast cancer awareness

    Sam’s Club maintains its emphasis on health care this month with a traffic-generating promotion tied in with breast cancer awareness.

    In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Sam's Club is offering free women's health screenings to members and non-members on Saturday, October 12 from 11a.m. to 3p.m. at its 576 clubs which contain a pharmacy.

  • Harris Teeter shareholders greenlight merger agreement with Kroger

    Harris Teeter’s shareholders voted to approve the previously announced merger agreement among Harris Teeter, Hornet Acquisition and Kroger.

    Approximately 98.6% of the votes cast were in favor of the agreement, representing approximately 82.5% of Harris Teeter’s outstanding common stock as of Aug. 22.

  • Jarden completes acquisition of Yankee Candle

    Rye, N.Y. -- Jarden Corporation, a global consumer products company, announced that it has completed its acquisition of Yankee Candle Investments LLC from a fund managed by Madison Dearborn Partners for approximately $1.75 billion in cash, subject to final working capital and other adjustments.

    Different developers look at mixed-use in different ways. One developer will look for trade areas that provide solid demand for retail, residential, office and perhaps other uses. The goal is to create developments where no single use dominates the others.

    Still other developers gauge the demand for various uses and adjust the use offerings to match demand. In such cases, one use may dominate the center.

  • Penney launches in-store Disney shops, new kids brands

    Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney Co. is set to launch Disney branded shops inside 565 Penney stores on Oct.4. The shops will offer toys, collectibles and children's apparel designed for Penney and showcasing various Disney characters, including those from Toy Story and Monsters University and Disney Junior shows.

  • Former Target exec Kelly joins Rexall

    Sister publication Drug Store News has learned that Mary Kelly has been appointed EVP and chief merchandising officer at Rexall Pharma Plus.

    Kelly, who has more than 26 years of experience leading business teams in Canada and the United States, joins the company after four years at Shoppers Drug Mart, most recently as EVP, merchandising and category management. Prior to that, Kelly served 17 years at Target in a variety of key leadership positions in merchandising and pharmacy, and at Revco Drug Stores and Eli Lilly before that. 

  • Teva opens first retail store

    Goleta, Calif. -- Teva has opened its first retail location, at Orlando Premium Outlets, in Orlando, Fla. The store features footwear for travel and everyday adventure, from sandals and trail shoes to sneakers, boots, and water shoes.  

  • West Elm to make Alabama debut

    Brooklyn, N.Y. - West Elm, a division of Williams-Sonoma, will open a store in Birmingham, Ala., on Thursday, Oct. 10. The 8,000-sq.-ft. store is located in The Summit Birmingham shopping center.
