    Apple’s Spaceship to Land


    Apple will open its highly anticipated new campus in April. Dubbed Apple Park, the site is located on a 175-acre site in Cupertino, Calif.

    The heart of the campus is a futuristic, ring-shaped, 2.8 million-sq.-ft. headquarters building that’s clad entirely in panels of curved glass. Designed in collaboration with Foster + Partners, Apple Park is powered by 100% renewable energy. With 17 megawatts of rooftop solar, the campus will run one of the largest on-site solar energy installations in the world.

  • J.C. Penney extending appliances initiative

    J.C. Penney is extending its appliance showroom footprint and also delving deeper into the category.        The retailer will expand its in-store appliance showroom concept from its current 500 stores to an additional 100 locations in early 2017, and also add new appliance brands to the merchandise mix, company chairman and CEO Marvin Ellison said on Penney’s quarterly earnings call.    
  • Shreveport center sells for $8.95 million

    Dalton Street Properties has acquired East Side Plaza, a Michaels-anchored center in Shreveport, Louisiana for $8.95 million. Other tenants at the 78,761-sq.-ft. center include Guitar Center, Dollar Tree and Cato.   “The East Side Plaza sale was a significant win for both parties, allowing the seller to exit a non-focal market while providing the purchaser with a high-quality asset,” said Fred Victor, VP of Transwestern, who brokered the sale on behalf of the seller, Eastside Dunhill.
  • Off-price giant to launch another new retail format

    TJX Cos. is preparing to debut a new retail banner.   Speaking on the chain’s quarterly call with analysts, TJX CEO Ernie Herrman said the company will open four home goods stores in the United States under a new nameplate this year, CNBC reported.   The new concept will allow TJX to enter new markets and sell products that it hasn't currently penetrated with its HomeGoods footprint, Herrman said, according to the report.     
  • Etsy looks to take bite out of Michael’s, Jo-Ann’s

    Online marketplace retailer Etsy.com is looking to expand its base of sellers by entering the estimated $40 to $44 billion craft supplies market, which is dominated by such retailers as Michael’s and Jo-Ann’s Stores.    In its largest expansion to date, Etsy announced it will launch Etsy Studio, which will sell craft supplies and offer DIY tutorials, in April. It is the first new marketplace Etsy has built from the ground up since it debuted in 2011.     
  • Sears Holdings adds to Trump defections

    The Trump brand at retail has taken another hit.    Sears and Kmart this week removed 31 Trump Home items from their e-commerce sites, Reuters reported, to focus on more profitable products. Neither Sears nor Kmart carried the products in their brick-and-mortar stores.

    A cloud computing/e-commerce giant heads up Fast Company’s annual ranking of the 10 most innovative companies in retail. Amazon not only topped the retail sector category, it also came in number one in the overall World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies listing. (Rounding out the top five: Google, Uber, Apple and Snap.)
  • Tractor Supply packs a double-digit wallop in Q4

    Tractor Supply Company shot up by the double-digits in the fourth quarter, with net sales jumping 16.4% over the year-ago quarter.   "While it was obviously a challenging retail environment, our Tractor Supply team managed the business well and drove strong comparable store sales and earnings per share growth," said CEO Greg Sandfort. "Throughout the quarter, the team worked hard to take advantage of weather trends, localize assortments, manage inventory and shorten the supply chain."
