  • Home Depot to hire 70,000 seasonal workers for spring

    Atlanta -- Home Depot Inc. said Thursday that its spring hiring numbers match last year’s, with plans to bring on 70,000 seasonal workers for the spring season.

    Last year, about half of the seasonal workers were hired permanently as cashiers, sales, lot and garden staffers.
     

  • Delhaize says goodbye to Bloom, cuts back on Food Lion

    BRUSSELS — Belgian supermarket operator Delhaize Group, which operates the Food Lion, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys, Hannaford Supermarkets, Reid's and Sweetbay regional banners in the United States, said Thursday it will close 113 Food Lion stores and eliminate the Bloom banner as part of a reorganization. The Fool Lion stores slated for closure are primarily in markets in which the company has the least store density.

  • Staples names communications exec

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples said Thursday it has appointed Kirk Saville as VP global communications, charged with overseeing Staples’ internal and corporate communications, marketing, public relations, community relations and corporate events.

    Saville, who joins Staples from The Hershey Co. where he was VP corporate communications, will report to Steve Fund, Staples senior VP global marketing.
     

  • RILA names tax policy VP

    ARLINGTON, Va. — The Retail Industry Leaders Association announced that Kirt Johnson will join the association as VP tax policy. 

    An expert with nearly 30 years of experience navigating tax policy on Capitol Hill and in the private sector, Johnson will lead RILA’s tax agenda, including the pursuit of comprehensive tax reform. Johnson will also provide support to RILA’s aggressive campaign to level the playing field in terms of sales tax collection between Main Street retailers and their online competitors. 

  • Tony Mancini appointed president of Alex Cannon

    New York City -- CM Design Studio announced that Tony Mancini has been appointed president of its Alex Cannon brand. The menswear brand is sold in shops at Lord & Taylor, Liverpool Mexico, and in better specialty stores nationwide.

  • A&P moves ahead with turnaround strategy as it closes more stores

    MONTVALE, N.J. — Grocer A&P has announced plans to shutter 14 stores in four states as it prepares to emerge from bankruptcy.

    The company has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York seeking approval to close the stores. The store closures are expected to be completed in the company's fiscal first quarter, subject to court approval.

  • SRS Real Estate announces new hire

    Dallas -- SRS Real Estate Partners said it has hired Stephanie Estabrook as a research consultant in the Denver office.

    Previous to SRS, Estabrook worked for Edgemark Development where she was responsible for research and acquisitions.

  • Electrolux names chief designer

    STOCKHOLM — Stefano Marzano has been appointed chief design dfficer, a new role at Electrolux.
