  • Jo-Ann hires former Disney, JCP exec

    Hudson, Ohio — Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has hired former Disney and J.C. Penney’s executive Kris Arabia as VP of product development. Arabia will report to senior VP and chief marketing and merchandising officer Riddianne Kline.
     

  • Easter holiday helps bolster Publix Q1 results

    LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix posted first quarter sales of $7.5 billion, representing a 6.1% increase. The Easter holiday in the first quarter of 2013, which was in the second quarter of 2012, increased sales by approximately 1.3%, the grocer noted. 

     

    Comparable-store sales for the first quarter of 2013 increased 3.9%.

     

  • Golfsmith promotes Eli Getson to executive VP

    Austin, Texas — Specialty golf retailer Golfsmith International has promoted Eli Getson to executive VP, general merchandising manager. In his new role, Getson will be responsible for all North American merchandising activity across the company's U.S. Golfsmith stores, Canadian Golf Town stores and e-commerce channels for both brands.
     

  • Google Wallet co-founder heads to Braintree

    SAN FRANCISCO — Braintree, a payments platform for online and mobile commerce, has appointed Google Wallet co-found Rob von Behren as the company’s lead engineer for its San Francisco office. 

     

    In his new role, von Behren will be charged with helping to advance Braintree's position in mobile commerce, including its one-touch mobile payment solution Venmo.

     

  • Former Sports Authority exec new Big Lots CEO

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Big Lots has named David Campisi as its new CEO and president. Campisi succeeds Steve Fishman, who announced in December 2012 his intention to retire upon the appointment of his successor. 

    Fishman will also step down from the board of directors immediately following the 2013 annual meeting of shareholders on May 30, at which time Campisi will be appointed as a director. The board also plans to elect a non-executive chairman of the board.

  • Bebe stores names CFO; eliminating COO position

    Brisbane, Calif. -- Bebe stores announced that it has promoted Liyuan Woo to the position of CFO.
       
    Woo will succeed Walter J. Parks, COO and CFO, who is departing the company effective May 3. The COO position will be eliminated and CEO Steve Birkhold will assume the COO responsibilities.
     

  • Safeway names CEO

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway announced that Robert Edwards, currently the company's president, will succeed Steven Burd as CEO when Burd retires as chairman and CEO on May 14. Edwards, 57, will also join the company's board of directors.

    "Since he arrived here in 2004, Robert has successfully met every challenge he has faced," Burd said. "He has demonstrated the ability to lead the company in all facets of its operations, and has earned the respect of the entire organization."

  • Digital coupon provider hires eBay exec

    AUSTIN, Texas — Digital coupon site RetailMeNot has appointed Giulio Montemagno as the company's first SVP of international. He will report to COO Kelli Beougher.
