  • Zale’s Zeterberg promoted to SVP

    DALLAS — Zale Corporation has promoted Bridgett Zeterberg to the position of SVP, general counsel and secretary. Zeterberg joined Zale in September 2010 and became general counsel and secretary in February 2012.

    She is responsible for all legal, compliance and contractual matters, as well as corporate and board governance. She will continue to report to Theo Killion, CEO.

  • Canada’s Hudson’s Bay to buy Saks

    NEW YORK — Hudson’s Bay Company has reached a deal to buy Saks Inc. in a deal that is expected to bring the luxury department store company to Canada. The Canadian retail conglomerate, which which operates Lord & Taylor in the United States and Hudson Bay in Canada, will purchase Saks for a total of about $2.9 billion. Purchase price includes $16 per share of Saks as well as the assumption of Saks’ debt.

  • Amazon to hire 7,000 workers in DCs, customer service

    Seattle -- Amazon said it will hire more than 5,000 full-time workers in its U.S. fulfillment centers and 2,000 customer service staff, including part-time and seasonal employees, to meet growing customer demand.

    The company said it will immediately begin hiring at 17 fulfillment centers for tasks that include picking items from warehouse shelves, packing them for delivery and operating new technology installed to streamline operations.

  • Electrolux strengthens supply chain leadership

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Electrolux Major Appliances North America has named Daren Couture as SVP of end-to-end supply chain. Couture will oversee the company’s supply chain and nine manufacturing facilities in North America, including the newest cooking appliances facility located in Memphis, Tenn. 

  • Broad-line supplier of MRO products bolsters executive team

    CHICAGO — Grainger, a leading broad-line supplier of maintenance, repair and operating products serving businesses and institutions, has appointed Dr. Michael Ali as the company’s SVP and CIO. He replaces Tim Ferrarell, who has assumed the new role of SVP, innovation and continuous improvement.

  • CIT names new head of U.S. subsidiary

    CIT Group Inc., a leading provider of financing and advisory services to small businesses and middle market companies, has appointed Randall Chesler as president of CIT Bank, its U.S. commercial bank subsidiary.

    He will be based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and report to CIT Bank’s board of directors. Chesler is currently vice chairman of CIT Bank and previously served as president of consumer finance and small business lending at CIT. He succeeds John Taylor who is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities and will assist in the transition.

  • HSN’s Grossman delivers NEW accountability message

    The state of gender equality among senior executive and in boardrooms is abysmal and “leaning in” isn’t enough to fix it, HSN CEO Mindy Grossman told a group of 300 retail and CPG executives recently.

    Grossman was a featured speaker at the annual Network of Executive Women (NEW) Executive Leaders Forum in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., last week. According to Grossman, woman “can lean in for the next 30 years and it will not be enough unless we hold boards and CEOs accountable."

  • Walmart rant of the week, courtesy of Ad Age

    Last week it was veteran retail analyst Walter Loeb bemoaning what he viewed as Walmart’s deteriorating store standards. This week Ad Age took aim at the company’s brand image.
     
    In a piece by Simon Dumenco, he recounts how early shopping experiences at Walmart stores were an eagerly anticipated experienced. However, like Loeb Dumenco took a shot at the store experience and then when a step further.
