  • Report: Best Buy settles employment discrimination case

    San Francisco -- Best Buy Co. has reportedly agreed to pay $10.2 million in a settlement related to a job discrimination class-action lawsuit, Reuters reported.

    The lawsuit, filed in 2005 in U.S. District Court in Northern California, alleged that the retailer discriminated against women, African-American and Latino employees by denying them promotions and more lucrative sales positions. Best Buy has denied any wrongdoing.

  • CB Richard Ellis names retail exec

    Newport Beach, Calif. -- CB Richard Ellis announced Monday that Scott Riddles has joined the company’s Western Division Retail team as a senior VP. Riddles will be joined by his current team – Derek Fitch, Rob Crumly and Ryan Riddles – and all will be based in the firm’s Newport Beach office.

    Riddles comes to CBRE from SRS Real Estate Partners, formerly Staubach Retail, where he was a founding partner.

  • Update: Ex-Apple exec fulfills dream, becomes JCPenney CEO

    PLANO, Texas — Last week, RetailingToday.com reported that former Apple executive Ron Johnson would succeed Mike Ullman as CEO of JCPenney. Today, JCPenney announced that Ullman, who was originally slated to remain on the company's board of directors indefinitely, will now be leaving the company on Feb. 1, 2012.

  • J.C. Penney details succession: Ullman to leave in February

    New York City -- J.C. Penney Co. on Monday detailed the timeline of its upcoming change in executive management with the news that current CEO and chairman Myron “Mike” Ullman will leave the company and the board in February 2012 after a three-month transition period during which he will hand over the reins in full to his successor, Apple retail guru Ron Johnson.

  • Kmart laying off 700 appliance workers

    New York City -- Kmart stores is laying off 700 employees in its appliance departments.

    The chain, a division of Sears Holdings Corp., is changing the way it sells appliances, allowing customers to check out appliances at any register rather than going to a dedicated register. Instead of having dedicated appliance-only associates, all Kmart staffers are being trained to answer questions about appliances.

    There will also be a 1-800 number customers can call for help.

    Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its long-awaited and much anticipated opinion in Dukes, et al. v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The Supreme Court reversed, and ruled in favor of Wal-Mart.

  • Guess chairman, co-founder to retire

    Los Angeles -- Guess said Monday that chairman and co-founder Maurice Marciano will retire as an executive officer in January 2012. However, he will continue to serve as a non-executive chairman and as a consultant for two more years after his retirement becomes effective.
