  • FMI names new director of government relations

    ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute on Thursday named Hannah Walker director of government relations to represent food retailers on Capitol Hill.

  • GameStop Q4 profit plummets 27%, plans fewer stores in 2012

    Grapevine, Texas -- Video-game retailer GameStop Corp. reported Thursday that profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 dropped 27% to $174.7 million, from $237.8 million in the year-ago period. Adjusted profit, however, matched predictions, as results included $64.6 million in asset impairment and restructuring charges.

    Revenue fell 3.1% to $3.58 billion from $3.69 billion, missing Wall Street’s expected $3.69 billion in revenue. Same-store sales slipped 3.6%.

  • Fred’s Q4 profit rises 14%

    Memphis, Tenn. -- Fred’s reported Wednesday that net income for the fourth quarter jumped 14%, boosted by more robust sales and a favorable tax adjustment.

    Profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose to $9.8 million, from $8.6 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue rose 2.5% to $497.6 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $498.4 million in sales.

    Same-store sales were flat.

  • Apple puts things in perspective for Target, other dividend payers

    Target announced completion of a $10 billion share repurchase program this week and reminded investors of its commitment to more than double its annual dividend payment to $3 by 2017. Too bad Apple announced the same day it would begin paying its first ever quarterly dividend of $2.65 later this year.

  • Report: Five Below eying IPO

    Philadelphia -- A Wednesday report by Reuters said that discounter Five Below is said to be considering an initial public offering. 

    The report, citing unnamed sources, said that the Advent International- and LLR Partners-owned chain has hired underwriters and is in discussions with bankers.

    Five Below is in a growth mode and could potentially command a market valuation of over $1 billion.

  • Securities fraud lawsuit against Best Buy dismissed

    Minneapolis -- Best Buy Co. said Wednesday that the U.S. District Court has dismissed putative securities fraud class actions against the retailer and three of its officers.

    With regard to the class action lawsuit filed last year, the court on Tuesday dismissed all counts for lack of substantiation.

  • ODP to offer prepaid card from American Express

    NEW YORK — Office Depot has teamed up with American Express to launch a prepaid reloadable card with no monthly or maintenance fees, will soon be available in retail at select Office Depot stores. The card will roll out in more than 1,100 stores across the United States in the coming weeks.

  • Gordmans profit rises 21% in Q4

    Omaha, Neb. -- Apparel and home décor retailer Gordman Stores reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose 21.2% to $10.2 million, from $8.4 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales increased 10% to $185.1 million. Same-store sales rose 2.1%.
