Kohl’s honored for energy conservation efforts

Kohl's is receiving EPA honors.

Kohl’s Corp. is being recognized as a leader in sustainability for the 13th straight year.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star program has presented the department store retailer with the 2024 Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence, which is the program’s highest honor and is reserved for participants demonstrating outstanding leadership, year over year.

Kohl’s is receiving this award for the 13th straight year, and is one of three retailers to be named to the program for more than 10 straight years. The EPA recognizes companies with the Sustained Excellence Award if they have already received Energy Star Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and have gone above and beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition.

The EPA has also recognized Kohl’s as a 2023 SmartWay High Performer, as 100% of its domestic miles are with SmartWay Carriers (a voluntary program encouraging carriers to cut emissions and be more aware of their sustainability impact).

Specific achievements that helped Kohl’s earn Partner of the Year recognition include:

  • 20 new buildings certified by Energy Star in 2023.
  • 95% of stores are currently Energy Star certified.
  • More than 200 LED retrofits were completed in 2023.
  • Nine solar projects were completed in 2023.
  • Six new stores received electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in 2023 for a total of 172 stores with EV chargers.
  • 100% of Kohl’s stores offer customer-facing dropoff bins for plastic film and bags to be repurposed into new materials.

Other sustainability honors

Kohl’s has also been included on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI) by S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for the last six years and been recognized for its climate change response with A- ranking from the non-profit CDP for five consecutive years.

Kohl's operates more than 1,100 stores in 49 states.
