JCPenney closing stores Thanksgiving; bringing back Martha Stewart

JCPenney has a multifaceted holiday promotional strategy.

JCPenney’s holiday plans include a day off for store associates, the return of a celebrity brand and special deals and experiences.

The department store giant will close all stores on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 28). However, its Black Friday promotion will begin with an early access sale Nov. 8-10, and thousands of special deals will be available from Nov. 22 – Dec. 1. 

In addition, on Friday, Nov. 29, JCPenney will offer exclusive one-day-only Black Friday discounts and giveaways available in-store at 5 a.m., 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., featuring special items like a “Golden Tote” that offers savings throughout the holiday shopping and the collectible JCPenney snow globe, available for the first time since 2015 in-store starting at 5 a.m. while supplies last.

Martha returns

JCPenney is also once again offering the Martha Stewart brand, including its latest expansion, The Martha Stewart Holiday Collection, featuring items such as a patchwork three-piece reversible quilt set, bath essentials and new categories like kitchen and dinnerware. The collection is now available in stores and online.

Prime Video collaboration

Throughout the football season through Thursday, Dec. 26, JCPenney will be announcing special limited-time offers on Prime Video Thursday night NFL broadcasts, with help from a rotating lineup of celebrities, including Shaquille O’Neal and Martha Stewart, presenting exclusive offers and promotions in a campaign called "JCPenney Really Big Deal."

These offers, accessible the Friday through Sunday following the broadcast online and/or in stores while supplies last, change weekly and will include products in a range of categories including fashion, home goods and beauty. The campaign is part of the JCPenney holiday shopping strategy.

Other special holiday promotions include:

  • JCPenney is the only retailer in the U.S. offering soccer star Lionel Messi’s inaugural fragrance and a gift set will be available all season.
  • JCPenney has partnered with celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims for a special experience called "SimStyled," available in a limited number of in-store salonConfidential locations beginning Monday, Nov. 18. The styling menu of texture hair looks, which utilizes products fromFlawless by Gabrielle Union, will change seasonally to reflect current hairstyles and trends, all of which are personally curated by Larry Sims.

JCPenney, which emerged from bankruptcy in late 2020 under new owners Brookfield Asset Management and Simon Property Group, currently operates 650-plus stores across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
