Hot K-pop group makes surprise appearance at MOA
Katseye, the girl group that is the current hottest sensation in Korean popular music, made a surprise visit to Mall of America — much to the delight of hundreds of “Eyekons” (their fans) lucky enough to find themselves in Minneapolis-St. Paul last week.
The six Grammy-nominated performers kicked off a special event sponsored by Kpop Nara, the leading seller of Korean pop recordings and merchandise.
Katseye took the stage in MOA’s rotunda for the first of five pop-up events being sponsored by Kpop Nara nationwide. Their hit single, “Gabriela,” landed the group a Grammy nomination for best pop group performance and they will be vying for the best new artist award, as well.
The event included immersive fan experiences, exclusive merchandise, and special giveaways.
Katseye, the first-ever global K-pop girl group, rose to international fame after starring in the 2024 hit Netflix docuseries “Pop Star Academy, Katseye,” which detailed the beginnings of the Kpop sensations.
In October of 2024, the group hosted its first U.S. performance at Mall of America, drawing nearly 8,000 screaming fans for a sold-out show. Last week, Katseye returned to Mall of America to greet fans ahead of their debut tour stop in Minneapolis.
The group is known for its distinctive Y2K fashion identity and, after the Netflix documentary appeared, their EP "Beautiful Chaos" landed on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Their success led to them winning brand endorsements for Fendi’s Baguette bag and Gap’s low-rise denim line.
Katseye has also endorsed Lush soap, Coach, and the Philippine fast food chain Jubilee.
In an interview with InStyle magazine, the group said that the name Katseye was derived from the gemstone chrysoberyl, commonly referred to as “cat’s eye.”
Group member Sophia explained that the gemstone's distinctive optical effect — where light appears to shift and reflect differently when viewed from various angles — corresponds to the composition of the group's members' diverse personalities and backgrounds.
Katseye’s six members hail from the Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States.
