Home Depot opens three DCs in Baltimore area

The Home Depot has expanded its supply chain capabilities to bring faster delivery options to customers in the Baltimore region.

During the past year, the home improvement giant has opened three distribution centers in the revitalized Tradepoint Atlantic development in Sparrows Point, Md. The 1.5 million-sq.-ft. campus will bring nearly 500 new full- and part-time jobs to Baltimore.

The newest Home Depot facility in Sparrows Point is an 812,000-sq.-ft. building that offers fulfillment for online orders. It features a zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell charging station that offers a sustainable and more efficient way to power material handling equipment.

Last year, the company opened a 698,000-sq.-ft. facility that serves customers with oversized and bulk flatbed delivery directly to their job sites. It also opened a delivery location that expands The Home Depot's appliance delivery to customers in the Baltimore area.

The company noted that the Baltimore market is a key hub for its delivery and supply chain strategy. Currently, The Home Depot operates five distribution centers across the state of Maryland, servicing 42 stores.

The Home Depot is in the process of building out its supply chain network with about 150 new facilities nationwide. In June, the retailer announced the opening of three new distribution centers in Florida.

In 2017, Home Depot announced a $1.2 billion investment to open about 150 supply chain facilities during the next five years, with the goal of expanding its same-day and next-day delivery options to 90% of the U.S. population. The facilities include a variety of formats to meet the needs of both its professional and do-it-yourself customers.

"We're focused on creating an easier and more convenient shopping experience for our customers' home improvement needs, whether they shop in stores or online," said Stephanie Smith, senior VP of supply chain for The Home Depot. "By investing in our supply chain, we'll continue to meet the changing expectations of our Pro and DIY customers – getting us closer to our goal of offering same day and next day delivery to 90% of the U.S. population."

The Home Depot operates 2,298 stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, 10 Canadian provinces and Mexico. In fiscal 2020, the company had sales of $132.1 billion and earnings of $12.9 billion.
