  • Snap off to sluggish start

Growth struggles, including lower-than-expected active user volume, marked Snap’s first quarter as a public company.   The photo-based messaging company, which went public in early March, is growing — albeit slower than expected. For the quarter ended March 31, Snap’s daily active users (DAU) grew to 166 million from 122 million in the first quarter of 2016 — an increase of 36% year-over-year.
  • Analysis: Despite setback, management taking Penney in right direction

JCP ended its last fiscal on a moderately upbeat note -- especially on the profit front, where it managed to push into the black. These first quarter results change the mood music to a much more somber tone and undoubtedly represent a setback in the company's recovery plans.
  • Supermarket chain files Chapter 11

Struggling Marsh Supermarkets is looking for a buyer, but it doesn’t have all that much time.    The 86-year-old grocery store chain on Thursday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and said it is seeking a buyer for all or part of its business.  The company’s 44 locations will continue normal operations throughout the process.  But the stores will be shuttered if the company does not find a buyer within 60 days.
  • Analysis: Turning around Macy’s not for the faint of heart

The first set of results under Macy's new CEO, Jeff Gennette, are not good. Indeed, they are decidedly gloomy and represent a significant deterioration over recent quarters. That this worsening comes off the back of feeble prior year numbers - when comparables fell by 6.1% and net income by 40.4% - only adds to the sense that Macy's is on a slippery slope.
  • Nordstrom mixed in Q1

Nordstrom beat the Street on earnings in its first quarter amid strong sales in its off-price division.     Nordstrom said it earned $63 million in the first quarter, compared with $46 million, in the year-ago period. The company earned an adjusted $0.43 a share, beating the $0.27 that analysts were expecting.   Total company net sales increased 2.7% to $3.3 billion. Same-store sales fell 0.8%, worse than expected.  Online sales accounted for 24% of total net sales.
  • Big earnings, sales miss for Macy’s

Macy’s reported disappointing earnings for its first quarter, as its sale continued to slide.    Macy's posted a first quarter profit of $71 million, or 23 cents a share, down from $116 million, or 37 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding some costs, Macy's adjusted per-share profit fell to 24 cents from 40 cents, below analysts' expectations for 35 cents.
  • Kohl’s Q1 profit up sharply but sales still slide

Kohl’s Corp. posted mixed results for its first quarter, as sales continued to decline but profit jumped amid expense control and more careful inventory management.    The retailer reported net income of $66 million, or 39 cents per share, in the quarter ended April 29, up from $17 million, or nine cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. The gain, much better than expected, came as the company cut general expenses by $33 million.
  • Nutritional retailer posts disappointing quarter

Vitamin Shoppe missed profit expectations for its first quarter, amid challenges with its Nutri-Force contact manufacturing division.    Vitamin Shoppe posted net income of $8.0 million for the quarter ended April 1, compared to $14.8 million in the same period last year.  Reported fully diluted earnings per share were $0.35 in first quarter 2017, compared to $0.59 in first quarter 2016.
