Done Deal: Giant Eagle completes $1.6 billion sale of GetGo stores to Couche-Tard
Giant Eagle Inc. has completed the sale of its GetGo convenience store business to Canada’s Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., whose banners include Circle K, the second largest C-store chain in by store count.
The grocer said the sale, which includes approximately 270 GetGo and WetGo locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana, will enable it to focus on growing its core supermarket and pharmacy businesses. The transaction also enables the popular myPerks loyalty program to continue without interruption at both Giant Eagle and GetGo locations.
"The sale of the GetGo business marks an important moment in Giant Eagle's history," said Bill Artman, president and CEO of Giant Eagle. "It is both a catalyst for investment into the communities we have served for more than 90 years and an assurance that one of the most valuable savings opportunities we provide to customers – our myPerks loyalty program – will remain with earning and redemption options at both Giant Eagle and GetGo."
Giant Eagle and Couche-Tard have agreed to partner together to maintain and expand the myPerks program, with customers continuing to earn and redeem rewards across Giant Eagle and GetGo locations. Additionally, customers enrolled in the myPerks Pay Direct and AdvantagePAY programs will continue to benefit from instant fuel discounts at GetGo.
GetGo will be a new and separate business unit in Couche-Tard's U.S. store network. The unit will be led by Mike Maraldo, a 33-year Giant Eagle veteran who has been VP of operations for GetGo since 2022. Senior operations leaders and management and functional support staff for GetGo will remain based at Giant Eagle's corporate campus in Cranberry Township, Penn.
“GetGo has earned a passionate following in the communities it serves thanks to an amazing team delivering a best-in-class food offer, in-store experience and loyalty program," said Alex Miller, president and CEO of Couche-Tard. "We're excited that they are now part of the Couche-Tard family, and we look forward to investing in the brand, empowering its continued success, and collaborating closely with Giant Eagle to create even more value for the customers we serve together."
In addition to Giant Eagle's sale of its GetGo business to Couche-Tard, the company also recently closed on the sale of its wholesale motor fuels distribution business to Cary Oil company.
Giant Eagle has more than 200 stores throughout western Pennsylvania, north/central Ohio, northern West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.
Couche-Tard operates close to 17,000 stores in 29 countries and territories.
