Dollar General will complete its continental U.S. presence later this year.

The discount retailer plans to open its first store in Montana in fall 2023, which will give it a presence in its 48th state and also expand it to every state in the continental U.S.

Dollar General is currently under construction on two store locations in Montana, including Columbia Falls (Flathead County) and Eureka (Lincoln County), and plans to evaluate additional areas in the state to add stores and serve new customers. The company is opening stores in Montana following its recent first-ever international expansion in Mexico.

The stores are expected to employ approximately six to 10 people each, depending on the individual needs of the location.

“Breaking ground on each new Dollar General is meaningful as it signifies upcoming affordable access to quality goods to customers, new jobs and career growth opportunities to employees, grant availability to local organizations improving residents’ education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and tax revenue for municipalities,” said Steve Deckard, Dollar General executive VP of growth and emerging markets. “Announcing plans for Montana has an extra element of excitement at Dollar General because our expansion in the Treasure State will complete our presence throughout the lower 48. We look forward to celebrating our first Montana grand opening in the coming months and to serve new customers, employees and communities soon.”

Dollar General alters expansion plans

Dollar General is preparing to open new stores in Montana as it is cutting back on the expansion of its Popshelf format, which is focused mostly on discretionary items, reducing the number of expected new store openings in fiscal 2023 to 990, down from its previous estimate of 1,050.

In line with its previous forecast, the company still anticipates 2,000 remodels, and 120 store relocations. During its most recent first fiscal quarter, the retailer opened 212 new stores, remodeled 582 stores, and relocated 22 stores.

As of March 3, 2023, the Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based company operated 19,147 Dollar General, DG Market, DGX and Popshelf stores across the United States and Mi Súper Dollar General stores in Mexico.
