Dick’s Sporting Goods is gearing up for the holiday season by planning to hire thousands of new workers.

The sporting goods giant said it aims to hire nearly 8,000 seasonal teammates for the 2024 holiday season, down from 8,600 last year. Dick's will kick off its holiday recruiting efforts  on Oct. 8 when it holds its seventh-annual "National Signing Day."  The retailer will be hiring for positions at its stores, along with Dick’s House of Sport, Public Lands and Going, Going, Gone! locations across the country.

Interested applicants should first apply online and then visit their local store on National Signing Day to be interviewed. Holiday hiring will continue beyond National Signing Day until all positions are filled. Dick’s says that employee turnover has steadily declined since 2021, leading to a decrease in seasonal hiring volume.

"Our seasonal teammates play a critical role in delivering exceptional in-store experiences for our athletes during one of the busiest times of the year, and we are thrilled to add nearly 8,000 more this holiday season," said Julie Lodge-Jarrett, executive VP, chief people & purpose officer at Dick’s.

Dick’s will close all its stores and distribution centers on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2024, allowing teammates to spend the holiday with their families. Seasonal employees will benefit from optional DailyPay and an associate discount of up to 25-40% off.

The retailer is coming into the holiday season following recent success. In its most recent financial quarter, net income at Dick’s rose to $362 million, or $4.37 a share, blowing past analysts’ estimates of $3.86 per share and up from $244 million, or $2.82 a share, in the year-ago period. Sales rose 7.8% to $3.47 billion, topping estimates of $3.44 billion. Comparable sales increased 4.5%, also more than expected.
