CVS upgrades, renames consumer app

The CVS Pharmacy app is now the CVS Health app and offers a number of new features.

CVS Health is launching the CVS Health app, which it is branding as the “successor” to the CVS Pharmacy app it introduced in 2011. A redesigned and personalized home screen features a health "to do" list and recommendations, including reminders to refill medications, updates on upcoming appointments and savings offers.

The retailers is also testing a capability in a handful of stores to use the app to open locked display cabinets for easier access to merchandise.

In addition, an AI-powered search feature is designed to help consumers locate products, services and information from across CVS Health and select third-party content providers. Other AI capabilities include a new conversational AI chat experience that enables patients to check information such as medication refills, status of their orders.

Users will also have the ability to manage prescriptions for their entire family across CVS stores, CVS Caremark mail orders and CVS specialty pharmacies, with delivery and fulfillment options and transparency into prescription order status and cost.

Other new features include:

  • Immunization scheduling for the whole family with group and multi-shot scheduling and easy-to-find appointments.
  • Access to health spending and benefit details for eligible CVS Caremark and Aetna members.
  • A personalized barcode to expedite prescription checkout.
  • Health and wellness content offered through external partnerships.

"As a company, we are super focused on improving the health care experience," said Tilak Mandadi, executive VP at CVS Health. "The CVS Health app will make it easier for our customers to access and manage their health and care, save time and money, and make informed decisions about their health."

According to CVS, many of these enhancements to the app were underway throughout 2024. The retailer says it will continue adding new app capabilities and features this year, including:

  • Access to personalized recommendations and educational content for customers managing chronic health conditions, as well as details on relevant cost savings and copay assistance programs.
  • Continued and enhanced integration with Aetna, Caremark and other parts of CVS Health to create a unified experience for consumers.
  • New digital offerings and partnerships designed to help consumers find holistic care and support.

"With 60 million digital customers, we are excited to continue to innovate and bring best-in-class and first-in-industry capabilities to our customers."

Headquartered in Woonsocket, R.I., CVS Health operated 9,406 CVS Pharmacy stores across the United States as of Jan. 22, 2024.
