Senator Dick Durbin and Diane Cullinan Oberhelman get the tractors rolling.

This week, Cullinan Properties’ majestic Rock Run Collection mixed-use project came alive at a groundbreaking ceremony for the retail zones in the 310-acre super-regional mixed-use center, located at the intersection of Interstates 80 and 55 in Joliet, Ill.

“It’s an exciting milestone for Rock Run Collection at the crossroads of Mid-America and the gateway to Chicago,” said Cullinan’s founder and chairman Diane Cullinan Oberhelman. “It brings together best-in-class retail, dining, entertainment, hospitality and residential experiences in one incredible location.”

Earlier this year, Dick’s Sporting Goods announced plans to operate a House of Sport at Rock Run. The 120,000-sq.-ft. facility is the first HOS to be built from the ground up in the Chicagoland area.

The retail zones are adjacent to the Hollywood Casino Joliet and The View apartment complex, further completing the 1.3 million square foot development that combines residential, dining, shopping, and green spaces.

Also on the dais was Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, who worked with the state’s other U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth to help secure $20 million in federal funding for a new interchange at Illinois Route 59 on Interstate 55.

“Local leaders, Cullinan Properties, and labor took the ball and ran with it,” Durbin told those assembled at the ceremony. “Today’s Rock Run retail groundbreaking celebration brings more businesses and jobs to the Joliet region and demonstrates how transformative investments in transportation at the federal, state, county and local level can be.”

With 230,000 vehicles projected to pass the center daily, Rock Run has super-regional access from central Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana markets with a metro reach into Chicago, according to Cullinan.

"Today's groundbreaking marks the start of something that will serve this community for years to come," said Vince Corno,  senior VP of real estate at Dick’s. "House of Sport is a destination where athletes can discover new products and connect with others through sport, and we look forward to creating that experience for athletes across the region."

When fully completed, Rock Run Collection will hold 570 multifamily apartments, 500-plus hotel rooms, some 150,000 square feet of office space, and more than 500,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and entertainment space.
