  • Weis Markets chairman is stepping down

    Weis Markets Inc. is losing one of its longest serving executives after the company announced that the chairman of the board is stepping down.

    Robert F. Weis will not stand for re-election to its board of directors at the company's annual meeting of shareholders on April 23, the company said.

    "We are deeply indebted to Robert for his 69 years of leadership and tireless dedication to our company," said Harold G. Graber, Jr., a director and secretary of the company.

  • Weis Q4 net income drops

    Sunbury, Pa. – Decreasing pretax income helped reduce net income at Weis Markets Inc. 12% to $13.9 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014 from $15.7 million in the year-ago period. Net sales rose 4% to $713.8 million from $686.4 million, while same-store sales increased 3.5%.

    The company attributed its sales increases to its pricing programs, which were fully implemented in the first quarter. Its results also benefited from strong sales increases in pharmacy, HBC and its fresh departments.

  • Weis Markets posts sales jump, expands store pickup

    Improved customer service programs and a better store experience helped regional grocery chain Weis Markets post a jump in same store sales for the fourth quarter.

    The Sunbury, Pa.-based food retailer reported that its fourth quarter same store sales increased 3.5%, while its net sales increased 4% to $713.8 million. During the 13-week period ending Dec. 27, the company's earnings per share totaled 51 cents compared to 59 cents for the same period in 2013. The company's fourth quarter net income declined 11.6% to $13.9 million.

  • GE executive to lead supply chain at Advance Auto Parts

    Advance Auto Parts has appointed a longtime GE executive as it supply chain leader. 

    Todd Greener has been named senior vice president and will lead the company’s supply chain function in its efforts to support Advance Auto Parts stores and customers.

  • Ikea selects VCC as GC for new store in Burbank

    Conshohocken, Pa. -- Ikea announced that it has chosen VCC to serve as construction manager both for the site work and store development of its new, larger store in Burbank, California. The new location will replace the chain’s existing Burbank store, which is also Ikea’s oldest store in the Western United States.

    Pending remaining approvals and permits, groundbreaking is on track for fall 2015 and store opening in spring 2017. Until the new, roomier store opens on the new site, customers can continue to shop at the existing Ikea Burbank.

  • Weis Markets Q2 net income plummets

    Sunbury, Pa. – Net income at Weis Markets Inc. plummeted close to 47% during the second quarter of fiscal 2014, compared to the prior year period. Weis reported net income of $12.8 million, compared to $21.18 million a year earlier.

    Weis cited company reinvestment and price discounting as driving the net income decline. Second quarter sales increased 4.5% to $691.9 million, from $662.1 million and same-store sales increased 2.9%.

  • Regional grocers’ sales grow faster than profits

    Publix Super Markets and Weis Markets reported respectable second quarter sales growth, but profits were harder to come by.

    Publix, the nation’s fifth largest supermarket chain, said sales for its second quarter increased 6.6% to $7.5 billion, with 1.3% of the gain related to the timing of Easter. Same store sales increased 6.3%. Despite the top line improvement, Publix said profits increased slightly less than 1% to $404.1 million from $400.9 million while earnings per share increased by a penny to 52 cents.

  • Sales declines impact Weis Markets

    Sunbury, Pa. – Declining sales across a variety of categories negatively affected year-over-year fiscal performance of Weis Markets Inc. during the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2013. Net income declined 29% to $15.7 million from $22.1 million during the quarter, and dropped 13% to $71.7 million from $82.5 million during the year.

  • Weis Markets elevates EVP Kurt Schertle to COO

    Weis Markets has promoted Kurt Schertle, previously the company’s EVP, to COO.

  • Weiss Markets names CEO

    Sunbury, Pa. — Weiss Markets named Jonathan Weis as president and CEO. Weis, 46, will also retain his role as vice chairman of the chain.

    Weis has been serving as the company’s interim CEO since David Hepfinger departed in September. He is the son of Robert F. Weis, who remains chairman of Weis Markets.
