    Retail real estate professionals and retailers have a symbiotic relationship when it comes to creating great shopping centers and memorable destinations. The former can develop, lease, and broker spaces in great projects in compelling locations, but a retail or mixed-use project is ultimately defined by its tenants: the better the retailers, the better the project.  
  • Singles Day: Alibaba reports record sales, but growth slows

    The 24-hour Chinese shopping mega-event known as Singles Day brought in record numbers for the country’s e-commerce giant, Alibaba. But it appears that the growth rate is decelerating.    Alibaba Group Holding Limited reported that the total amount of goods and services sold by vendors (known as gross merchandise volume) over its e-commerce sites rose 24% to a record $17.8 billion this year. Last year, by contrast, sales on Alibaba platforms increased 60%.  
  • First Look: Nike SoHo is something to see — and experience

    Nike has upped its game in downtown Manhattan.    The athletic giant has opened a five-level, multi-sport category outpost in the heart of New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.   
  • Hudson’s Bay adds position to lead partnerships

    Ed Burstell will join Hudson’s Bay Company’s leadership team as head of partnerships.    In this newly created position, Burstell will develop and lead partnerships to drive innovative and exclusive offerings across all of HBC’s banners globally — a move that will help differentiate the company across the marketplace. Burstell, who comes aboard on Dec. 5, will report to the company’s CEO Jerry Storch.  
  • Tanger breaks ground next to Texas Motor Speedway

    Raceways appear to be the newest fertile ground for retail. International Speedway Corporation recently started construction at One Daytona, a mixed-use project across from Daytona International Speedway, and now Tanger Outlets has started up a new center a lap away from Texas Motor Speedway.  
  • .shopping domain is open for business

    There is a new identity option for retailers eager to stand out in a competitive digital landscape.   The introduction of the 'dot-shopping' (.shopping) domain provides retailers with another way to brand themselves online. Launched by domain name provider Donuts Inc., the new digital names, also called "not-com" domains, can be used as a brand’s main e-commerce name. It can also point shoppers to a company’s existing online shopping web site, or a marketing or promotional site.  
  • RILA, ICSC in partnership to improve energy efficiency in leased spaces

    Three groups have joined together to empower commercial building landlords and tenants to improve energy efficiency in leased space and reap up to $5 billion in annual energy savings.   The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), and the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) are launching a coordinated national effort, called the Landlord-Tenant Energy Partnership, to reduce energy use across billions of square feet of leased space.    
  • Another sports retailer files for bankruptcy

    The waning popularity of golf has taken its toll on the nation’s largest specialty golf retailer.

    Golfsmith International Holdings Inc. on Wednesday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, amid increasing debt and citing a strategy that it launched several years back to open bigger, most costly stores at a time when golf was beginning to decline in popularity. (Just last month, Nike last month announced it was leaving the golf hardware business, its worst-performing division. Adidas is selling its golf equipment business. )

  • Report: Amazon claims top spot in social ranking

    The real retailer winners are those that truly “listen” to their customers, and then use learned details to motivate consumers to shop.   By perfecting this practice, Amazon.com has earned the highest amount of mentions and awareness across social networks, and Tiffany & Co. was the most passionately and positively discussed brand.  
  • Sporting goods retailer expands New York footprint

    Modell’s Sporting Goods will open two stores in the New York metro area on August 25, bringing its total store count to 156 locations.     The openings include Modell’s 11th location in Brooklyn, and a store in in Mount Kisco.    Both locations will feature a wide selection of top brands such as Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, Reebok, Spalding and more.
