  • Hedge fund adds former Home Depot, Staples execs to aid Office Depot fight

    New York -- A Tuesday report by the Wall Street Journal said that activist hedge fund Starboard Value has added former Home Depot and Chrysler executive Robert Nardelli and ex-Staples vice chairman Joseph Vassalluzzo as advisors – part of Starboard’s plan to make sweeping changes at Office Depot Inc.

    According to a Monday filing, Nardelli and Vassalluzzo will provide counsel toward improving Office Depot’s operations and strategies.

    Oxnard, Calif. -- Brixmor Property Group announced the grand opening on November 14 of a 32,906-sq.-ft. Walmart Neighborhood Market at Esplanade Shopping Center, located in Oxnard, Calif.

    Walmart Neighborhood Market will be celebrating its opening only weeks following the grand opening of another new retailer at Esplanade Shopping Center, Dick’s Sporting Goods.

  • Lowe’s looking better with room for improvement

    Positive same-store sales in 12 of 14 merchandise categories at Lowe’s pushed third-quarter profits up 76%.

    Lowe's reported third-quarter net income of $396 million, up 76% from earnings of $225 million a year ago on revenues that increased 2% to $12.07 billion, ahead of consensus estimates of $11.93 billion. Same-store sales increased 1.8%.

    Lowe’s president and CEO Robert Niblock called the results solid and said the company is focused on improving execution, delivering value and increasing product differentiation.

  • Dick’s faces new golf competitor

    ROSWELL, Ga. — Dick’s Sporting Goods is looking at increased competition in its core Northeastern markets as PGA Tour Superstore prepares for the grand opening of its first retail location in Paramus, N.J.

    The 57,000-sq.-ft. store will open its doors Wed., Nov. 21, and offer a wide selection of golf merchandise and apparel, including more than 15,000 golf clubs and 10,000 pairs of shoes for every level of golf and tennis enthusiast.

  • PGA Tour to open first Northeast location

    Roswell, Ga. -- PGA Tour Superstore announced it will open its first Northeast location, in Paramus, N.J., on Nov. 21. The 57,000 sq.-ft. store will offer a selection of golf merchandise and apparel.

    The overall trend has been similar to what we saw last month with a marginal decrease in the number of circulars, while increases were seen in page counts per market. Average pages per market saw 10% increase this year October when compared with the same month last year.
